“Okay,” Elian relented. “I’ll keep looking. You tell me if you remember anything else that may give some clues, okay?”

“Okay,” Audrey said, quiet once more. “I can do that.”

Elian had never seen her like this.

And while she would have liked to see what may have come of it, she didn’t want to do that at Audrey’s expense. It wasn’t worth speeding the search along if it hurt her friend.

Audrey shook her head without meeting Elian’s eyes. “No.”

“Audrey—”

“Elian,” Audrey returned, stone-faced, but fully cognizant and present in the moment. The sternness on her face was almost…familiar, somehow.

The memory sounded fond, but Elian saw nothing close to fondness in Audrey’s gaze when she mentioned her boy’s father. “Could you tell me his name?” Elian asked. “Maybe I could find your boy through him?”

“I remember…my boy…seeing his hair. He was born with so much of it.”

“Dark, like yours, right?” Elian asked gently.

Audrey nodded. “I remember telling his father we’d be having to slick it back in no time. That he’d be like a little movie star.”

Audrey blinked. “I suppose it does take time…”

Elian smiled, intending to ask another question but biting down on it when she saw Audrey had more to say. It was too rare of an occurrence to squander.

Audrey looked down at said pearl buttons, then touched the tips of her fingers to the stiff style her raven hair was set into, almost curiously.

“It seems very…meticulous and clean,” Elian elaborated. “Like you must spend a long time getting it exactly right.”
