Let everything that breathes praise the LORD
(The last phrase of the Psalter.)

Mt 17,8
«And when the disciples raised their eyes,
they saw no one else but Jesus alone.»
Not so much ‘where did Moses and Elijah go?’, but rather ‘where are they?’. The Law and the Prophets are in Him.

with the Church’s teaching on human dignity, the primacy of the family as a prior social reality that government should respect and protect, the principle of subsidiarity, and the inherently social character of human nature underlying the whole social order. 5/5

Most of us aren’t lawyers, but we can follow an argument. I wouldn’t recommend relying on an AI summary.
The brief is not primarily a theological argument; it proposes that birthright citizenship is solidly part of US law, and a legal principle that is in deep concord… 4/5

The sections on harm caused to society and the family by abandoning the principle (II,B-C) are pertinent to the issue of “what happens under our current system if the principle is abandoned”. 3/5

See I, A: “To Dismantle The Principle Of Birthright Citizenship Would Undermine Both The Legal And Moral Foundations of American Society.”
One really can’t argue that the Church should have said something when Dred Scott was being decided, but should not say something now. 2/5

It would be good to read the USCCB amicus brief in defense of birthright citizenship. For one thing it reminds us that the 14th Amendment was a deliberate reversal of the dreaded Dred Scott decisión denying citizenship to slaves and their children. 1/5

Il étend une nuée pour les couvrir;
la nuit, un feu les éclaire.
*A good verse to consider as we head into II Lent:
“His face shone like the sun
and his clothes became white as light…
And behold,
a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,..

Ps 105,39*
Expándit nubem in protectiónem
et ignem, ut lucéret eis per noctem.
Tendió una nube que los cubriese,
y un fuego que los alumbrase de noche.
He spread a cloud as a screen
and fire to give light in the darkness.

Tú que defiendes al débil del poderoso,
al pobre y humilde del explotador
you who rescue the weak from the strong and the poor from the oppressor

Independent religious, human rights & legal-aid organizations should have regular access to federal immigrant detention centers, including & especially those privately operated. Humane conditions & treatment need to be verified. Assertions that everything is fine are not enough.

«Consideremos la realidad envuelta y oculta en la oscuridad de la semejanza. Esta oveja no significa solo una oveja, ni este pastor significa simplemente un pastor, sino algo más. En estos ejemplos se encierran realidades sagradas.»
The parable discussed is that of the lost sheep.

«Let us consider the reality wrapped and hidden in the obscurity of the similitude. This sheep does not signify only a sheep, nor does this shepherd signify plainly a shepherd, but rather signifies something other. Within these examples, sacred things are enclosed.»

The bishops of the Texas/Mexico border are meeting in El Paso, Texas, these days. The pastoral mission of the Church flows from our communion with each other in Christ.

He’s talking about the sacramental signification of the parables. Typical of the patristic age to read the parables as only fully understood in light of the Pascal Mystery.
I’ll try to say more on this later.

Today, S Asterius of Amasea, (Hom. 13, PG 40).
Rem obscuritáte similitúdinis obvolútam atque recónditam considerémus. Ovis hæc non ovem omníno, nec pastor ille plane pastórem, sed áliud quiddam signíficat. His exémplis sacræ res continéntur.
