We have recently updated FlyCyc biocyc.org/DMEL/organis..., the pathway-genome database representing Drosophila metabolism, to include enzymatic complexes as well as further improvements to enzyme annotations. #FlyCyc is now classed as a β€˜Tier 1 Highly Curated Organism Database’.

FlyBase secures funding for year, but future still uncertain The FlyBase team’s fundraising efforts have proven successful in the short term, but restoration of its federal grant remains uncertain.

πŸͺ° folks! I spoke to the Transmitter about FlyBase. As noted at flybase.org, bridge $ ran out and many staff were laid off.

Good news is stopgap contributions will keep core FlyBase operations active. But community support remains essential. Please donate @FlyBase and share! 1/2

Very proud of Celena Cherian in the lab, who contributed data to www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Briefly, Celena showed female fat body cells have higher ribosomal protein expression and more protein synthesis than males. This difference persists even after cell size is accounted for!

Puja’s data suggests that Tachykinin and Allatostatin C act on neurons to mediate this effect on fat storage. However, the subset of neurons upon which they act is unclear (but was not the insulin- or Akh-producing cells).

Because these hormones affect behavior and physiology, Puja tested whether this female biss in hormone production affected fat storage. She found Tachykinin and Allatostatin C contribute to greater fat storage in female flies with no effect in males.

Briefly, Puja saw a strong female bias in mRNA levels of hormones produced by gut enteroendocrine cells. This sex bias was not caused by sex determination gene transformer.
