Just checked and base camp is at 5300 meters. Surpasses my personal record of 5000 when I visited Bolivia. At 4500 I felt altitude sickness that evening. Feels pretty brutal.

When was the affected book published? The book I registered almost 10 years ago already had a streamlined digital process. If you are pretty nifty filling out the form, signups will take you 5 minute for a single book application.

I wonder how this will affect authors that mainly write in languages other than English. Supposidly translations to English qualified. Would have to see if there were any examples of this situation and if the beneficiaries are translator and/or author.

Given over 70% of the stolen works were discarded assuming duplicates don't count, this could become a huge future lawsuit. Authors from other English speaking countries and all foreign language affected works could open a new vlass action suit far bigger than this one.

I agree. I can understand the US registry requirement for statutory damages. But to discard any stolen book in any foreign language even if it otherwise qualified is a huge slap in the face to billingual authors.

You would have to look at the TOS of the journal, especially at the time your affected paper was accepted. Usually journals force authors to renounce ownership rights to publish. If this is not the case, the journal gets 50% the authors evenly split the 700 remaining USD.

I believe this will depend on what kind of academic writing this is. I can see textbooks having a good chance if its just a few authors. Science journals less so because you 'relinquish rights' as part of their TOS.

I saw the tweet, would be good to tell this to @victoriastrauss.com because the only real recourse for foreign authors like myself is to register in the US copyright office or lobby their countries to change their nation's laws to include statutory damages.

It would be difficult since you'd need a PET scanner and there's only 3-5 of those machines in the entirety of Mexico, make enough recordings of fluent trilinguals to think in a specific language, separate trilinguals by similarity of language aquisition. But it would be cool.
