Youโ€™re right. Reform and their cheerleaders are hurting bad today - itโ€™s absolutely glorious to watch

There seems to be widespread denial about just how extreme Reform is

From setting up a British ICE to โ€˜undoing the sexual revolutionโ€™ this is an extreme policy platform - and one clearly inspired and influenced by Trumpโ€™s US and its outriders

There was a complaint from a young woman at GB News about Matt Goodwin's behaviour. Farage knew about it before the by-election selection.

โ€˜They pushed so many lies about recyclingโ€™: the fight to stop big oil pumping billions more into plastics Plastic production has doubled over the last 20 years โ€“ and will likely double again. For author Beth Gardiner, metal water bottles and canvas tote bags are not the solution. So what is?

There are plastic particles in the brains of everyone on the planet yet every year the amount being produced and dumped into the environment goes up.

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitterโ€™s algorithmic feed significantly shifts peopleโ€™s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers Iโ€™ve read in awhile.

Plants like CO2

Plants don't like droughts, floods, fires, unseasonal frosts or being out of sync with their pollinators, which excess CO2 causes

This intelligent man knows all this, but he's using his platform to lie because he owns a coal mine

So much worse than genuine denialism - it's evil

Point of no return: a hellish โ€˜hothouse Earthโ€™ getting closer, scientists say Continued global heating could set irreversible course by triggering climate tipping points, but most people unaware The world is closer than thought to a โ€œpoint of no returnโ€ after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, scientists have said. Continued global heating could trigger climate tipping points, leading to a cascade of further tipping points and feedback loops, they said. This would lock the world into a new and hellish โ€œhothouse Earthโ€ climate far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. The climate would also be very different to the benign conditions of the past 11,000 years, during which the whole of human civilisation developed. Continue reading...

Apple & Google removed ICE tracking apps in their app stores.

TikTok reportedly suppressed videos criticizing ICE & the shooting of Alex Pretti.

Meta blocked Facebook groups tracking ICE & links to a database of agents that the government wants to keep secret.

Matthew Goodwin, Reform and the politics of resentment The โ€˜heterodox intellectualโ€™ turned populist is a morbid symptom of the digital age

Reformโ€™s candidate for the Gorton and Denton byelection will be Matthew Goodwin. James Bloodworth profiled the controversial right-wing populist last year, calling him a โ€œmorbid symptom of the digital ageโ€:

Just days after a group of Trump-aligned billionaires officially took over TikTok in the U.S., users reported their videos criticizing ICE and the shooting of Alex Pretti were suppressed or delayed.

The oligarchy is tightening its grip over even more of our media.

Beware.

I think there are 2 reasons why Farage is allowing this:
1) Heโ€™s got over confident and thinks he can get away with it
2) Heโ€™s realised since the council elections that relying on recruiting Twitter trolls as candidates probably isnโ€™t a very good idea

in trying to understand what makes ICE and CBP so dangerous right now, it is tempting to imagine some new lack of training or experience or professionalismโ€”and not grapple with the truth that a white nationalist movement has put more power and force behind their existing mission

A National Security Assessment highlighted nature as a national security risk earlier this week.

Yet yesterdayโ€™s Habitats Regulations report shows many of Englandโ€™s most important habitats are rapidly declining.

Just 3% are in good condition.

And half are in an unfavourable and worsening state ๐Ÿงต
