#UWCInauguralLecture: In conclusion, he argues that we remain in a “pseudo-transformation” phase. Real transformation will only come when classrooms prioritise epistemic justice and when teachers and learners are free to dream, to reason, and to act. #IAmUWC

#UWCInauguralLecture: Prof Maarman critiques the bureaucratisation of teaching and the pressure to comply with overbearing testing regimes. He calls for a shift toward a more humane, justice-oriented and responsive education system. #IAmUWC

#UWCInauguralLecture: His research includes 10 PhD studies that used the Capabilities Approach to explore diverse educational themes, from teacher agency and school leadership to gender inclusion, progression policy, and the role of the National Development Plan. #IAmUWC

#UWCInauguralLecture: He argues that curriculum challenges are not just about content, but about the learning environment. “Sometimes it’s not about the curriculum, but the curriculum in context,” echoing the voices of teachers across the country. #IAmUWC

#UWCInauguralLecture: Prof Maarman uses real examples from his teaching. In one case, third-year students scored an average of 5–8 out of 30 in basic geography mapwork. In another, most final-year BEd students asked why learners in schools can’t read properly. #IAmUWC

#UWCInauguralLecture: He highlights the pandemic’s impact, citing studies from Soweto, Khayelitsha and Mtubatuba that show how hunger, food debt and loss of income disrupted learners' wellbeing. “Education cannot be separated from the socio-economic context.” #IAmUWC
