I'm still only 2 episodes into Umineko myself, and while the power gap in their relationship, and between men and women in general, is brought up, the age gap isn't. I think it's possible Ryukishi just doesn't see it as an issue.

A common thing in JP media is that they just do not care about age gaps between teens and early 20s, ages 16-24 are treated as if they're one age bracket. Other examples: Shiki and Ciel in Tsukihime, Lien and Kizuna in Somnium Files, Nina and Momoka in Girls Band Cry.

It can be, but often the manga actually starts before the anime airs in order to promote it, print media is just quicker and easier to get off the ground than animation. See: Patlabor, Eva, Utena.

it's a movie that on every level is ultimately about men and their desires, despite supposedly focusing on a cast of teen girls. Your read is entirely hinged on that idea too, so I feel a little validated.

I've always read L&P as a kind of paternalistic fantasy. There's this girl who strays from the right path and "devalues" herself, and through the narrative and the kindly narrator, Anno guides her back into the safety of her nuclear home and father's arms. I've always disliked it bc it feels like

Then there's stuff like the entire Japanese government being played by Seele, an international organization with distinctly western features like a German name and very not Japanese looking members. Or the way the JSDF is presented as completely incapable of defening the land from an invading force.

I think the politics are less literal but they're there. In the most obvious example, episode 6 features Operation Yashima, the everyday citizens of Japan must unite and give up their modern conveniences in order to reroute enough power to a weapon that can heroically destroy an invading enemy.

A lot of people see Anno as having left behind his relationship to the nationalist idea after Gunbuster and the 90s crash, but I think it just got more complicated and messy. I don't have a perfectly coherent read of nationalism in Eva, but I do know that a close reading isn't complete without it.

Also not holding things creatives said literally 30 years ago against them now, or acting like it's hypocritical for them to change their mind over time.

Yeah, RE2R starter here, game got me into RE and survival horror in general. There's some AAA series/devs and a lot of AA that have managed to keep up pretty consistent schedules. RE, Xenoblade, Zelda, FromSoft, Atlus (including them dropping 3 massive releases in 1 year in 2024).

This was also MEANT to be the relationship for the Rebuilds with chief Anno and director Tsurumaki, but between the production hell those movies suffered and Anno's meddling nature, he overstepped his role a lot. I hope the torch can be passed to the next generation properly this time.

I can't see it laid out clearly anywhere, but I'm fairly sure the relationship here will be Tsurumaki as chief director and Yatabe as director. That was the case for 3.0 [-46]. In other words, Tsurumaki will manage the production but Yatabe will be the main creative force.

I think people are into the idea of NGE being low budget bc it evokes this sense of it being something niche, underground and subversive. But it was funded by many of the biggest anime producers of the time and had an all star staff. It was always intended as a hyper commercialised franchise.

And worth noting that there's zero evidence Eva had a below average budget. It's production got rough due to bad management and scheduling, common story across the industry, they ran out of time, not money.
