I know that the people who need to read this arenβt here, but here goes:
Rules of engagement arenβt for the enemy. Theyβre for you. Theyβre for your soldiers when theyβre captured or wounded. Theyβre for your civilians when theyβre in range of the enemy. Theyβre for your allies, to reassure.

Everyone talks about ageism in publishing, but no one is talking about how masterfully the publisher concealed the fact that Virginia Evans is actually a millennial.

I know it has its enthusiasts but so far the most consequential impact of AI has been to allow certain humans to kill other humans with far greater speed and efficiency. Well done, nerds.

I agree with you but if someone is bestselling and is like, married to a developer (this is a combo of people, I'm not calling anyone out), they probably have the privilege to create that experience for themselves for three weeks and leave the fellowship to emerging writers.

right? if you trace the line back to the fact that they applied for it? thinking they should have it over someone who's working on their sophomore book or whatever. It doesn't feel right to me.

Great thread. I can't engage with platner stuff online bc I grew up in Maine and the politics are so much more complex than outsiders, who only want to talk about the tattoo, can understand.

I also understand that some communities of color in Maine β the whitest state in the country β have refused to give up on him and I think their position in relation to him matters and tells everyone else something about their political situation and what feels urgent to them

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isnβt living in a bubble. I donβt need to know whatβs going on at X. I wonβt be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

The biggest publishing misconception I have to clear up about a press our size is that we don't pay royalties on net price. I get why really small presses have to but charging the writer for printing feels so weird to me.
