I know that the people who need to read this aren’t here, but here goes:

Rules of engagement aren’t for the enemy. They’re for you. They’re for your soldiers when they’re captured or wounded. They’re for your civilians when they’re in range of the enemy. They’re for your allies, to reassure.

Everyone talks about ageism in publishing, but no one is talking about how masterfully the publisher concealed the fact that Virginia Evans is actually a millennial.

I think the big secret is that all but about six of those books are really nonprofit endeavors.

I don't really write anymore but I eagerly await the day sewanee or breadloaf sends me a visiting publisher invitation and I will make it into my own kind of residency haha

But also this is totally a gut feeling coming from me, who doesn't even get invited to teach at the fancy bucolic residencies and is dyyyying of jealousy about it lol

I agree with you but if someone is bestselling and is like, married to a developer (this is a combo of people, I'm not calling anyone out), they probably have the privilege to create that experience for themselves for three weeks and leave the fellowship to emerging writers.

right? if you trace the line back to the fact that they applied for it? thinking they should have it over someone who's working on their sophomore book or whatever. It doesn't feel right to me.

We're so desperate for it to happen we're like "the neck! Look at the neck! The neck is dying!!"

and videos are now podcasts? and video makers now get books based on their podcast videos?

I feel like the whole media environment wants to make books into videos, the same way they've made podcasts into videos

scrolling the feed right now has taken on an even stronger "opening montage showing apocalyptic chaos spreading across earth that sets up the dystopian movie" energy

Great thread. I can't engage with platner stuff online bc I grew up in Maine and the politics are so much more complex than outsiders, who only want to talk about the tattoo, can understand.

I also understand that some communities of color in Maine — the whitest state in the country — have refused to give up on him and I think their position in relation to him matters and tells everyone else something about their political situation and what feels urgent to them

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

We're really through the looking glass feeling here involves him not asking for congressional approval OR really providing a single reason for this action. So now he can do anything he wants.

It would be cool to have a legislature that acted to defend its own constitutional prerogatives and, maybe as a treat, the interests of the people it represents too.

I am sure JD Vance will resign in protest, right?

The biggest publishing misconception I have to clear up about a press our size is that we don't pay royalties on net price. I get why really small presses have to but charging the writer for printing feels so weird to me.
