Great thread. I can't engage with platner stuff online bc I grew up in Maine and the politics are so much more complex than outsiders, who only want to talk about the tattoo, can understand.

I also understand that some communities of color in Maine β€” the whitest state in the country β€” have refused to give up on him and I think their position in relation to him matters and tells everyone else something about their political situation and what feels urgent to them

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

So does that offset the eight he's ended? I expect him to send the Nobel committee a full balance sheet.

We're really through the looking glass feeling here involves him not asking for congressional approval OR really providing a single reason for this action. So now he can do anything he wants.

It would be cool to have a legislature that acted to defend its own constitutional prerogatives and, maybe as a treat, the interests of the people it represents too.

I am sure JD Vance will resign in protest, right?

The biggest publishing misconception I have to clear up about a press our size is that we don't pay royalties on net price. I get why really small presses have to but charging the writer for printing feels so weird to me.

Listening to All Things Considered and Hillary Duff just pronounced the word "cathartic" in the wildest way

The best thing you can do in light of the Ellison takeover of Warner Brothers invest your time, energy, and money in supporting independent creators and independent distribution networks and independent venues. It is absolutely crucial to make independence a viable option.

I know! That was this one for me. I've got a Chapel Hill thing immediately before our Paris Review party in NYC and I know my energy levels--if I'd added AWP, I know I'd get too rundown. (And I said, I do WI every other year bc of the cost.)

And Minneapolis in 2027, for sure. Winter Institute is too goddamn expensive for small publishers to go every year and I'd be happy to tell that directly to the ABA, if I thought they cared.

I felt secure in my decision not to go to WI and AWP until invites started rolling in, and I'm now feeling sad about it. I will, however, be in NYC in late March!

House Republicans have just introduced a bill that would result in a NATIONWIDE book ban. Oh, the bill is also specifically transphobic. Contact your House Rep and ask them to publicly oppose this legislation. A few more thoughts in the thread about this action. bookriot.com/hr7661-book-...

The book industry is doom and gloom these days but at @hubcitypress.bsky.social, sales are up 30% over last year because of three national awards for two weird, short novels. Good things still happen to books, y'all. (Also, a reminder to publish what you love and not only what you think might sell.)

The DOJ hid accusations against trump in the epstein files story was out on NPR yesterday morning (and lead story of the hourly news broadcast) and the nyt had to wait until they were done with SOTU content before reporting it?

"Let the bears pay the bears tax! I pay the homer tax!"

And ofc, "and how much are you charging for this free weekend??"

(I could do this all night. Way better than watching SOTU)
