'Why it would be a big mistake for the US to go to war with Iran'
My latest for @theamargi.bsky.social :The Return of #Thucydides at Davos: Mark Carney, a Broken World Order, and the Kurdish Moment of Truth:
When Carney said โthe old order is not coming back,โ he wasnโt being dramatic - he was naming a rupture. For Kurds, this is an existential warning.

This is the Kurdish moment of truth.
Nostalgia is not a strategy. Moral legitimacy is not protection. The age of danger has arrived - and the system will fail those it was never built to defend.
For stateless peoples, this matters more than for anyone else. Kurds do not trade in leverage or deterrence; they survive on arrangements that can be revoked, rewritten, or ignored overnight.
23.01.2026 15:03 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Davos has long sold the idea of rules, institutions, and predictability. Carneyโs speech quietly admitted the truth: those guarantees now function by habit, not force - and habits are breaking.

theconversation.com/signs-that-t... - As Trumpโs second term unfolds, contradictions at heart of his โAmerica Firstโ agenda are increasingly apparent. What began as a populist revolt against elite globalism appears to have morphed into policies that alienate constituencies that thrice backed him

โA scenario involving significant US casualties would also undermine the โAmerica Firstโ approach associated with Donald Trump, esp at a time when domestic political & economic pressures in the US are already high, & public tolerance for costly foreign entanglements is low.โ
14.01.2026 16:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0โAdjusting troop levels is therefore a precautionary move to reduce vulnerability and protect personnel in a moment of heightened risk, reflecting realism about how Iran has behaved in past confrontations rather than any loss of US commitment to the region.
14.01.2026 16:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0โUS planners are acutely aware that if Iran were attacked, it would almost certainly respond, and history shows that response would most likely involve strikes on nearby US military bases rather than on the US mainland,โ
14.01.2026 16:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0My remarks shared with @metrouk.bsky.social on the US troop reduction in Qatar, a major Middle East base, after Iran tensions continue to grow.
This is a obviously strategic and operational calculation โ not a retreat!

My latest piece for @uk.theconversation.com just out: 'The use of military force in Iran could backfire forย Washington'
theconversation.com/the-use-of-m...
I argue that a missile strike wonโt break the regime, it willย solidifyย it & true solidarity with Iran lies not in dramatic intervention, but in principled restraint & grounded support for Iranian civil society. Democracy can't be imposed - especially not at the point of a missile.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0And yet, military escalation risks reframing it as exactly that - giving the regime the excuse it needs to escalate repression even further.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The current protest movement in Iran is decentralised, civic-led, and powered by women and marginalised groups - especially in Kurdish regions. It is not a foreign project.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thatโs why many Iranians today reject foreign-backed figures like Reza Pahlavi - not because of who they are as individuals, but because ofย what they represent: monarchy, exile politics, and external agendas disconnected from local struggles.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The Shahโs authoritarian reign that followed left behind a legacy of trauma and distrust that still shapes Iranian political consciousness today.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0#Iran is not a blank slate.ย In 1953, the CIA and MI6 overthrew a democratically elected government led by Mohammad Mossadegh - not to promote democracy, but to protect oil interests.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0As #Washington weighs military responses to Iranโs brutal crackdown on protesters, the real question is not whether the US has tools - but whether any of them willย actually work, and what unintended consequences may follow.
13.01.2026 16:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The piece examines the limits of #US foreign policy toward Iran and the dangerous allure of interventionism - especially in moments of legitimate, organic domestic protest.

Add #Iraq, #Afghanistan, #Syria; intervention hollowed states or empowered armed actors. Escalation risks turning protest into proxy war, not change. Support civil society - donโt rewrite it as a security threat.
