This is the only time I will praise a corporate PII grab, but a frantic search showed that I had stored the recovery key in a microsoft account. I HAVE MY FILES!!!! That is the only thing that matters, but this could have been so much worse.

I felt the bottom drop out of my soul when, after carefully extracting and encasing the SSD from my dead laptop, I connected it to my friends laptop and say "Bitlocker Recovery Key needed. Abandon all hope."

It will be 29 hours before I can even check the status of the drive. I'm sitting here trying to distract with mindless TV shows because there's a decades worth of linguistics and rhythm research locked up in there. Stupid not to have had it backed up.

I have so much data in that drive. If I can't recover that research it's going to take me a very long time to recreate it. Take a lesson from my misery and find a backup strategy you can live with immediately.

I've been slacking in the Vss365 department recently... time to try and come back.

I can't use cloud storage because every one of them has terms that are loose enough for scrapers to get through. Maybe Proton storage. Maybe I need to get a CD burner for archive. If I lose Treasure Island I'm going to be devastated.

Thank you for the thunderstorm that rolled through last night and took out my laptop with a near strike. Hopefully I'll be able to recover the files using an external SSD shell and a friend has an older laptop I can use tomorrow but this really sucks

Got news for them. Right click an image with text and search with google lens. OCR has been a thing since the 90s. Alt-Text is just good manners. Scrapers don't need it.
