I did both. 😁 Not at the same time, thoughβ€”I didn't manage to rig up a sign-holding solution.

I'm riding @sandiegomts.bsky.social this week to get to jury duty (SO much easier than parking downtown).

The PA periodically announces key rule reminders: "No smoking, baking, or eating are permitted on the trolley." 🀨 It took me WAY too long to realize it was "vaping," not "baking." πŸ˜‚

My birthday is coming up, so @dbl53x11.bsky.social is in charge of opening and screening packages. Whenever he says, "What the heck is THIS?!" I know it's a birthday gift for meeeeee.

The teenager is sick so I moved one of our air purifiers to his vicinity and cranked it up to turbo. Turns out the air purifier on turbo sounds just like our air fryer, and I've been craving tater tots all day. Pavlov had a point.

I did it! I just got through my last Slack notification and I still have two minutes before I need to leave for the day. I am an amazing genius.

SIGN THE PETITION: Stand Against Trump's Budget Proposal to Defund IMLS. Trump is more emboldened than ever to destroy library funding. We need you to take action today!

On May 2, 2025, the Trump Administration released its FY2026 federal budget proposal.

On page 39 he calls for the complete elimination of the only federal agency dedicated solely to supporting America’s libraries and museums.

My 16-year-old: "LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, right?"

Me: "Uh, maybe?"

16yo: "Pretty sure it is because why else would Shift-Ctrl-η”°-Alt-L be a built-in shortcut on Windows?"

Me: "…it's weird that you know that."

The (weird) kid is correct, though. Both about the shortcut and the ownership. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

One of today's (many) exciting discoveries: my beloved Bernat Maker yarn dyes beautifully even with my cheapo Rit dye.

So far I've just done one quick test, but I think an ombre octopus amigurumi might be in my near future.

For my tapestry loom project, I need a large "fender washer" with a ΒΌβ€³ hole. They're not readily available in brass, though.

Fortunately, there's similar hardware used in furniture restoration. Unfortunately, the hole is just shy of ΒΌβ€³. Fortunately, brass is soft and I have a drill and clamps!

It's taking much longer than expected (which is pretty much the story of my life), but my tapestry loom pieces are all cut and sanded, and I have fasteners. Now we'll see how good my math was...

A collection of woodworking tools and parts spread out on a beige carpet. A blue case of Forstner drill bits is open on the left, and a transparent plastic storage box holds various CNC drill bits. On top of the storage box, there is a gear-shaped wooden piece, a round wooden piece, and two yellow plastic mini-sanders. Nearby are sandpaper sheets, a black plastic drill jig, a hex key tool, and a carved wooden handle with notches that match the gear-shaped piece.

My criteria for "what constitutes an amazing shopping haul" have changed dramatically over time. Now that I'm into woodworking and CNC, new drill bits and weird little sandpaper gizmos THRILL me.

(And @yokoco.bsky.social helps me lean into my weird with a Personal Development Budget! 😍)

We've been watching Wheel of Time season 3 this week, and it is SUCH a joy to my nerdy heart.

Robert Jordan imagined a vibrant, fascinating world but lacked the writing skills to do it justice.

The show's thoughtful changes are making the series what it ought to beβ€”redeeming it. ❀️

This is the pattern I used: www.etsy.com/listing/8053...

There are free patterns out there but I preferred the look of this one compared to others. It was generally easy to follow and I'd recommend it.

Now will it *work*? I'm very curious to find out, too.

After bleaching and dyeing: The same crocheted hornet’s nest now appears in a speckled gray color, hanging from a knob on a gray cabinet. The textured yarn layers remain visible, and the background includes stacks of papers, craft supplies, and skeins of yarn.

This was a good idea in theory but, when the yellow was not altered a bit after soaking all night in bleach, I definitely started feeling nervous (did I mention the birthday is almost here?!). Fortunately, the crafty YouTubers pointed me towards Rit Color Remover. One trip to Michaels later...

Before bleaching and dyeing: A crocheted imitation of a hornet’s nest, designed with pastel-colored yarn, hangs from a metal hook on a refrigerator. The layers resemble soft-serve ice cream, with pink at the bottom, yellow in the middle, and white on top.

I read that hornets are territorial and can be dissuaded from nesting by the presence of an existing nestβ€”even if it's fake.

I decided to crochet one for my country-living Dad as a birthday gift. I used cotton yarn odds and ends I had on hand with the intent to bleach and dye it.

Trump’s Pentagon is erasing Navajo Code Talkersβ€”Indigenous warriors who helped win WWIIβ€”from military websites. This isn’t about β€œefficiency.” It’s about whitewashing history and erasing those who don’t fit his MAGA narrative.
