Chief Justice John Roberts — usually careful to hide irritation — flatly told Sauer that his reading of the law was “a misfit.” Even Neil Gorsuch, one of Trump’s own appointees, pushed back hard, asking what would stop Congress from simply giving the president all its taxing power if this logic stood.
