Women face an alarmingly high risk of self-harm and suicide during the perinatal and postpartum periods. Tragically, suicide is one of the leading causes of maternal death, surpassing even hemorrhage and hypertensive disorders.

PMADs pose serious risks for both mothers and their children. Children of mothers with major depression face higher chances of neurodevelopmental delays, behavioral challenges, attachment issues, and mental health disorders later in life.

Women who are recent immigrants and those from ethnic minorities from non-English-speaking countries face higher rates of PMADs. Language barriers, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with the healthcare system create significant obstacles to mental health care.

Black and Hispanic women are disproportionately affected by PMADs, and women living in poverty face double the risk of depression. These inequities highlight the urgent need for maternal mental health support and systemic change.

We must educate communities and equip healthcare providers, families, and women with the knowledge and tools needed to protect new mothers, safeguard newborns, and ensure safer pregnancies.
