Lai effectively takes on the role of both the resident swindler and of (aspiring) love interest when it comes to his relationship with Mayumi, so both scenes still feature that romantically charged and heavy flirtation element for both main characters as well.

The other big focus in Nisemonogatari of the scene with the merry-go-round is obviously Hitagi's presence, so it's both a scene about the main character's love interest and the swindler character. Whereas in Bishounen Tanteidan, those roles ends up bleeding together with Lai

in one of the Shaft details of all time in Episode 7 of both Nisemonogatari and of Bishounen Tanteidan, when the main character goes to meet with the swindler, both scenes take place in front of a carousel with the fade from afternoon to twilight throughout the conversation
