(a no longer) stray cat i watch you sit at the window, your notched ear pricks up at the sound of a garbage truck. the february sun warms the frozen grass, and i wonder what your last winter was like. did you make yourself a soft bed under a neighbor's deck? i used to watch you from the same dining room window, slinking from yard to yard, sunning yourself from the protection of the shrubbery. i contemplated if you would ever accept a scritch under the chin. the day you asked my daughter to come in, we opened the door without hesitation. although bedraggled, you had the air of a kind, gray gentleman. that was a ruse to get tuna treats. as a house cat, who manifested this outcome, you have certainly filled your days with activities like hiding among the towels in the linen closet,
