Well, destruction comes in many shapes, so here's a bit about the emotional kind.

I've been going back and forth on the title of Book One in The Blessed trilogy for months. I've had all the other titles, but the first book's I've always treated as a placeholder.
I think it's time to make it official.

The Blessed Book One is The Deceived.

37 chapters, 120K words done in this first draft. One more chapter and the epilogue and it'll be around 125K, some 25K longer than my plan for Book 2.
But then again, when I first began thinking about writing this story, it was supposed to be an 80K standalone πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Current projected word count on Book Two is 125K 🫣
1.5 chapters and the epilogue left to draft.

I made a plan for the remainder of The Blessed Book Two on Monday, and today I decided it actually needs fewer chapters.
This is why I don't outline. I tend to veer off the path because it feels more organic.
So it'll be 38 chapters and the epilogue, it seems.

Not bad! I've been preparing for work on draft four for weeks now and every little bit helps.

And that's another 1.6K words of things falling apart written in the final act of The Blessed Book Two. For now. Might still add more today.
Writing it is a delight. May the revisions, when they come, be also πŸ™

Zora has never felt like she truly belonged in the idyllic village she grew up in. With her adoptive mother taciturn on the topic of the woman who died giving birth to Zora, a curiosity about her roots gnaws at her.
Iluaneh has been forced into service in the army of her people's oppressor, part of which is a mission to locate and fetch the lost daughter of the king's sister.
When two soldiers arrive in Zora's village looking for the heir, Zora is quick to realise it is her they are looking for. Furious with the woman who raised her for withrdrawing the truth from her and desperate to find a place she'd belong, she joins Iluaneh and her commanding officer, Marton, on their journey back to her uncle's seat.
But between them and the royal castle is a vast, magical forest, filled with creatures of myth and legend. In order to get through it and come out of it alive, they will have to overcome the differences that had sprung between their peoples since the land divided centuries ago, get over their personal animosities, and battle their own internal struggles.
And all of that in addition to the magical dangers that await them along the way.

Still haven't even begun working on draft four of Book One, but I feel drafting the summary for your query letter can really help figure out the story you want to tell.

The book's not done--as I said, I still have a few chapters left, and it's only draft one. The genre is fantasy.

Thirty-five chapters (almost 115K words) in draft one of The Blessed Book Two are done. Five more and the epilogue remain.
I both am excited to do it and dread it. Just imagine me screaming about it, that's definitely what I'm currently doing (internally).

I am a pantser through and through--I mean, I do know the direction I'm going, but little else--so plotting out the last few chapters of the novel right as I get to them is more plotting than I usually do.
Anyway, apparently that's what morning commutes are for πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I don't need AI, I need a way to record my shower thoughts directly onto a device, so I don't lose any great ideas I get while naked, soaking wet, lathered in soap, and absolutely in no way able to use anything but my brain. And that hard drive is a sieve.

"Yes, silly. Has no one ever told you you're beautiful?"
"Does my mother count?," she offered, attempting light-heartedness.
"Your mother most definitely does not count."

A morning writing session produced almost 1.9K words, and had me emotional and chuckling, and gods, how I love these characters.
One of my favourite bits from today (spoiler-free) below πŸ‘‡

LADY KNIGHTS πŸ—‘πŸ—‘πŸ—‘

As I get closer to finishing draft one of The Blessed Book Two, I'm more and more tempted to write some more stuff exploring the backstories of some of my characters πŸ‘€
That should help me work out how to write Book Three when I get there.

Words written today: 2.5K
Total number of words in The Blessed Book Two draft one: 108K
Have I actually got closer to finishing it? Debatable.
Was I kicking my little feet up while writing? Certainly.

Yeah, that's what I keep telling myself. And my critique partner has yet to read most of it, so I might get some actionable feedback about what to cut.

So, after writing some 1.6K words today, the first draft of The Blessed Book Two is at 105K words. I am not finished with it yet. I have not even begun writing the climax (any kind of climax, tbf). In a manuscript I expected to be 100K words πŸ’€

Adventures in writing fantasy:
Stopped myself from using "china" instead of porcelain, and now I'm reminding myself that my characters are not speaking English and I'm using the best real-world equivalent anyway, because actually, it's a translation of what happened in a different world.

The Blessed is a trilogy that starts with a journey, arrives at the king's court, and--gods willing--ends up in conflict that will either unite the land or tear it thoroughly apart.
If that didn't convince you, let me say it has sapphic lady knights.

The Hand You're Dealt is speculative, steampunk, & sapphic. It has found family and fabulous friendship. There are heists and heirs, moral greyness and actual greyness of smog and the North of England.
