I think he or some similarly situated clown will say it’s not a war unless Congress says so, but the president can otherwise do whatever they want militarily as a part of the foreign relations power inherent in the executive

Yeah fair point, I take no pleasure dunking on a grieving motherβ€”even if she is incoherent. It’s terrible journalism. I’ll delete

Her son died, drowning in Iraq, and she thinks war waged in Iran is justified payback.

No parent should bury their children. But we’re just supposed to nod our heads to that?

User Chris: What was the core difference why you think the DoW accepted OpenAI but not Anthropic

Sam Altman:
I can't speak for them, but to speculate with the best understanding of the situation.

*First, I saw reporting that they were extremely close on a deal, and for much of the time both sides really wanted to reach one. I have seen what happens in tense negotiations when things get stressed and deteriorate super fast, and I could believe that was a large part of what happened here.

*We believe in a layered approach to safety--building a safety stack, deploying FDEs and having our safety and alignment researcher involved, deploying via cloud, working directly with the DoW. Anthropic seemed more focused on specific prohibitions in the contract, rather than citing applicable laws, which we felt comfortable with. We feel that it it's very important to build safe system, and although documents are also important, I'd clearly rather rely on technical safeguards if I only had to pick one.

*We and the DoW got comfortable with the contractual language, but I can understand other people would have a different opinion here.

*I think Anthropic may have wanted more operational control than we did

I saw some folks asking what the difference was between what OpenAI signed with the DoD and what Anthropic said they wanted, and Sam more or less admits here the key point: OpenAI's deal requires them to trust the NSA. Anthropic's contract had real safeguards.

could one solution to tanking in the NBA be to increase the salary cap for bad teams?

bad teams can be more competitive, but at a significant cost to ownership

thinking out loud, maybe that is obviously flawed for some reason

It's heartening to see the number and diversity of amicus briefs in the birthright citizenship case.

Basically all of American legal and civic society vs a few no principles hacks.

interesting how spontaneous conspiracies based on actions and no other communications suffice here, but not in the antitrust context

Why is my Pepco bill so high? We dug into DC's electricity The cold weather is only part of the story.

NEW: When cold weather arrives, most people expect to see a bump in their utilities.

But recently, many D.C. residents have been shocked to see their electricity bills had double and even triple β€” in some cases, climbing $1,000+ in a single month.

What's going on? @samdelgado.bsky.social reports:

Earlier this summer, I presented Textualism Step Zero at the Harvard-Yale-Stanford Junior Faculty Forum

I begin with a confession of my failures and say something about a failure in textualism-hey, and this is different for me-even a way to fix that for textualism!
