I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money

This is a quote from the article summing up both studies in Technology Review: "A multi-university team of researchers has found that chatting with a politically biased AI model was more effective than political advertisements at nudging both Democrats and Republicans to support presidential candidates of the opposing party. The chatbots swayed opinions by citing facts and evidence, but they were not always accurateβ€”in fact, the researchers found, the most persuasive models said the most untrue things."

Two independent studies found that AI chatbots were better at persuading voters than political ads. The most persuasive bots also lied the most. This is something that humans working in psyops have known for decades. AI is psyops at scale. www.technologyreview.com/2025/12/04/1...

Tenured US professor fired over pro-Palestinian protests contests dismissal Sang Hea Kil is first tenured faculty member fired from a public university in connection to the protests

Universities will keep sexual predators on the faculty because their "hands are tied by tenure." Turns out protesting genocide is all it takes to loosen those unshakable chains.

Some of the fired-up "students" Turning Point USA brought to its youth rally for gerrymandering at the Indiana state house yesterday. Kids today! You may not agree with everything they say, but it's just great to see them getting involved.

Bombed Chornobyl shelter no longer blocks radiation and needs major repair – IAEA Drone attack that Ukraine blamed on Russia blew hole in painstakingly erected €1.5bn shield meant to allow for final clean-up of 1986 meltdown site The protective shield over the Chornobyl disaster nuclear reactor in Ukraine, which was hit by a drone in February, can no longer perform its main function of blocking radiation, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced. In February a drone strike blew a hole in the β€œnew safe confinement”, which was painstakingly built at a cost of €1.5bn ($1.75bn) next to the destroyed reactor and then hauled into place on tracks, with the work completed in 2019 by a Europe-led initiative. The IAEA said an inspection last week of the steel confinement structure found the drone impact had degraded the structure. Continue reading...

Reform Government Secrecy The government keeps too many secrets, and many shouldn’t be secrets in the first place. We must fight overclassification and defend our right to know.

54 years ago, Sen. Mike Gravel had the courage to read the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record, ensuring the public could read the classified findings.

Today, someone in Congress today needs to find the same courage to read the boat strike memo.

Tell them to with @freedom.press's tool.

At my institution it became clear over the years that university administration never listened to leadership or advisory groups composed of faculty, even when the groups had contractual standing (Faculty Handbook). Decisions were always top down, absent of expert (faculty) input.

I'm devastated by what the field has lost in terms of pandemic prevention research and infrastructure, but even more for the (to date, 60+) PhD students and postdocs on the project, many of whom face an immediate funding cliff at the end of the year. NSF had the funds for them and just didn't pay /3
