It’s the hope that kills you.

As so often, a fabulously clear explanation- thank you. My close Bahraini friend is sitting at home listening to drone strikes and trying to explain to her deaf father why he should not go out to shop. I’m going to forward this link to her.

Not much of a β€˜fashion’ - searching it leads to fascinating insights into carbon technology.

Beautiful. We were there before Christmas and I was stunned by the peace and beauty of Western Australia. I hope it is a healing and connecting experience for you.

Chuck her out when you catch her scratching inside and direct her to a more appropriate source of abrasion?

Is she allowed outside?

I wasn't disagreeing with you. My Norwegian students are fluent in English, but my incentive to improve my Norwegian fluency is partly to be a better teacher to them, and partly to deal with my own discomfort around teaching them in a 'foreign' language.

Your first sentence there explains the rest of your post. But yes, I suppose on that basis we can just decide not to bother, or to learn how to order a beer and a plate of chips in our chosen resort!

I didn't let my children do homework when they were at primary school. Teachers (disclaimer - I am a teacher) were largely supportive. If they weren't, I did the homework myself. My adult children now say that is how they ended up with a decent work ethic - defy the parent!

I learned German at school and it was a brilliant stepping stone into Russian and the Nordic languages. UK has a particularly odd attitude to language learning, where it is viewed as some kind of rare talent, rather than a necessity as the rest of the world sees it. Colonial legacy doesn't help.

There are also issues around personal safety, especially for women.

But what incentive is there for decent people to enter politics?

And media don't report it. Hard to get your message out when much of the media already hostile.

I worry that the Mandelson storm is creating the perfect conditions for a Reform government here, which would align very nicely with the Trump camp’s desire to see the Right take over Europe. Perhaps too much of a conspiracy theory - but is this deliberate?

Older women are invisible in many walks of life. And stereotypes of grey haired, toothless, shapeless forms shuffling about in cardigans and fluffy slippers are what generally appear in media portrayals of any of us over 60.

Does any of your reporting air in the US? There are people who need to hear this!

They know what they say is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

The media know that what they repeat is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

Their supporters know what they are told is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

Telling the truth is not enough, unless people care about the truth.
