My #proterozoic deep water seds are Choc full of microbial structures showing that the sea bed was effectively sealed during deposition. This must have had a significant impact on nutrient cycling through the proterozoic.

Something I see in my deep water #Proterozoic seds is thick metre scale intervals composed almost entirely of (maybe) colonial protists that are so abundant they are effectively sealing the seafloor. This must have had a significant impact on nutrient cycling through the Proterozoic.

Transition layer depth over the Phanerozoic.
Gray lower curve reflects data with a lower-bound decompaction factor of 1.0 applied; green upper curve reflects data with an upper-bound decompaction factor of 3.0 applied. Curves produced by LOESS smoothing model with Ξ± = 0.3. Shaded areas are 95% confidence intervals. Geological timescale visualized using the R package deeptime (v1.1.1)

Nowadays, animals till the seafloor. They make holes, eat the organic matter buried there, and flush the sediment with water. But this system had to evolve through the Phanerozoic into its current form, with a few ups and down along the way. πŸ§ͺβš’οΈ

At the immigrating service for what will hopefully be the last part of the long registration process.

The bell still sounds like a silent Hill sound effect.

4-panel comic by War and Peas Panel 1: A woman conducts a job interview. She asks the candidate, β€œSo last question: Where do you see yourself in five years?” Panel 2: The candidate imagines a post-apocalyptic world with fire, wrecked cars, and ruined buildings. He’s dressed like a survivalist and holding a rifle. Panel 3: Still in his imagined future, he’s crouched in a desert landscape, aiming a sniper rifle. Panel 4: His crosshairs are locked on a killer robot attacking a terrified woman.

That would be especially useful with proterozoic acritarchs.

They are from the legacy generations line and are updated articulated versions of the G1 figures. They also combine into Menasor!

Been singing in this unventilated cupboard for the last three hours. Be thankful you cannot smell this image. The air inside is *chewable*

I really felt the "novel experiences" bit. That's why I like geology so much. It's all novel experiences all the time. It's also why "normal" jobs almost killed me, and why it would be game over if I went back to that life.

I agree, I'd put Ediacarans in 4th. Precambrian acritarchs is pretty tame and polite tbh. I think there's maybe one bad egg. Everyone else I've met has been chill.

A buzz saw like whorl of prehistoric chimera teeth

What a whorl.

Helicoprion tooth spirals were first described by paleontologists in 1886. How and where the whorls fit in the living fish was a mystery. It wasn’t until 2013 that CT scans of a whorl with some skull cartilage revealed its placement in the lower jaw of a prehistoric ratfish. πŸ§ͺ
