But I hear you and it's true in the referenced discussion, too, that the person was claiming "censorship" over a public venue cancelling a controversial comedian. He's not being censored, he's just not being *platformed.*

Ah, sorry I should offer more context. This was specifically talking about a show that was cancelled in Canada, where people do not have that right. We have stricter hate speech laws here; the Charter guarantees freedom of expression, but not free speech, specifically to guard against hate speech.

Look... checking myself here because I realize I came at you hard. You are not solely responsible for these mechanisms, but you are reinforcing them and you need to understand that. If you are "free to walk away" that's great for you--meanwhile, I get death threats and targeted violence based on shit people heard from a guest on Joe Rogan or an episode of South Park (yes, this has literally happened to me, more than once.) That is why this is so emotionally charged for me and many others. When people are putting these attitudes out there, they will come back to the targets eventually, even if the targeted people "walk away" from the source. You say opinions are like assholes, but they're not. Opinions are like chemical elements. There are multitudes of them, most are pretty innocuous, more are always being found, they combine in different ways, some are stable on their own but reactive around specific others, some are essential for life but toxic in excessive quantities, some are rare and precious, and some are just fucking poisonous in any amount. When you defend people's apparent "right" to spread poisonous ideology throughout society, you are enabling the death and suffering of vulnerable people. If you are more concerned with censorship than the reality of people being hurt, you need to look at that. I would recommend starting by looking up the paradox of tolerance and the Overton window. You should also look into the phrase "stochastic terrorism", a method wherein people disguise hate speech by "not meeting the threshold" knowing that the violent attitudes it enables will take affect regardless.

Trying to explain why right wing comedians/podcasters should, in fact, be cancelled and thought this analogy might be helpful to other people either working to understand this personally or explain it to others.
