Despite needing an edit (particularly the first act) and at times being a little too polished, this film is an emotional & powerful ride, highlighting the disparity between two peoples living on the same land. Both gentle & brutal and both forgiving & vengeful. #SydFilmFest

A doco more suited to a 1-hour TV special rather than a feature. Nicely enough done with lots of great music & footage but also a lot of unnecessary talking from friends and band mates, with nothing overly revelatory. A tragic end to a musician with so much promise. #SydFilmFest

Panahi’s slow burn masterwork is deeply personal, quietly unraveling and paints a devastating picture of the repressive regime. The descent into hell is perfectly controlled and never losing its power or forcefulness. The final act is cinematic perfection. #SydFilmFest

Had a lot of potential to be a quality adult drama but infusing comedy around the subject of sexual assault doesn’t work. The dialogue was awful, particularly in the first third of the film, with the characters themselves not overly likeable, save for the neighbour. #SydFilmFest

Films that don’t try too hard often work best and The Ballad of Wallis Island works very well. Charming and delightful and true to its intention. A sweet tale of innocence and happier times with good performances throughout. Loving and lovely. #SydFilmFest

What else is needed on such a sad day? Brian Wilson made music and our hearts soar. So long. πŸ’«

In the age of 24/7 media, misinformation & AI, Trump & Musk and despots and dictators the world over, a documentary like this is even more relevant & urgent. A powerful portrait of Orwell’s famous novel playing out in real time in today’s upside down world. Essential.#SydFilmFest

A deeply moving and intimate portrait of Warren Ellis, his music, his suburbia, his parents and his Sumatran wildlife sanctuary. Lovingly juxtaposed between the man we all know and the peaceful safe haven he helped create. An emotional ride throughout. #SydFilmFest

Despite being a tad long Pike River is a terrific true-story drama, full of power and emotion and holding the powerful to account and fighting for justice to be done. A raw and heartbreaking story beautifully directed with tenderness and care. #SydFilmFest

Raw & visceral & at times incredibly powerful but it becomes very monotonous and repetitive. Focussing on one battle we lose the overall context of this devastating war…but perhaps that’s the point. War becomes personal and small and affects the unknowns of society. #sydfilmfest

A rollicking good time in shark invested waters. Australian shock horror done well. An original take on the serial killer film. Both leads work terrifically together. Great with a packed cinema too.

.@jonathanalter’s fantastic biography of #JimmyCarter tells us all we need to know about the man. Before the arrival of Trump there was a man of decency, honesty, faith and integrity. A life well lived.

Anora is propulsive & urgent and you can’t look away for a second. Mikey Madison delivers a knockout, star-making performance which is both brave & honest. Sean Baker’s nuanced script is filled with wit and charm but never pathos. The supporting actors are all drawn to perfection.

Seeing #Interstellar at IMAX is quite the experience. Powerful and immersive and makes us feel very small in the universal scheme of things. Nolan paints on an enormous canvas and hits the mark every time. A stunning achievement. πŸš€πŸͺ

The Brutalist is enormous, epic in scale and scope and impressively grand. Art on screen and not a frame wasted. Brody and Pearce are both terrific. Beautifully directed and edited and a great, heavy score. Its 240 minutes was a breeze.
