It look less than 24 hours for Brett Smiley’s “new” executive order to fall flat.

Last week, masked ICE agents arrested two of our neighbors.

Since then, Smiley has been silent. Providence needs a mayor who will take action, not performative press conferences.

And the energy continues! Our grassroots campaign is powered by us, the working people of Providence ✊🏾

During the signing, Smiley lied to the press and to people of Providence by saying that the Providence Police “will not and do not” collaborate with ICE. This comes after his police were caught illegally assisting ICE in July.

Yesterday, Brett Smiley signed a four-month-late executive order that does nothing to protect our neighbors from Trump’s immigration raids. 🧵

Our communities don’t need performative press conferences that accomplish nothing. What we need is for the City to stop being silent when ICE is in our neighborhoods and to actually enforce our Sanctuary City Policies. That’s how we build a safe Providence for All.

I’m grateful to the community organizations that have been on the frontlines for the last several months protecting our immigrant neighbors from ICE. AMOR, PSL, and ONA have been defending our immigrant community through the Deportation Defense Line [401-675-1414].

I’m glad to see the Mayor finally recognizes that there is an illegal ICE presence in our city while supporting our vision of a Providence for All.

That said, today’s order does nothing more than sign his name to an existing law he’s been failing to enforce for 9 months.
