Editor on the 'Gaslight Sherlock Holmes' series, 'Professor Challenger: New Worlds, Lost Places' and 'Beyond Rue Morgue' anthologies. Mostly, I just like to read... but will rage about Canadian politics as a federal Liberal and AB NDP supporter in Calgary.

On this day in 1933, King Kong premiered. It starred Canadian actress Fay Wray as Ann Darrow. The film became a commercial and critical success and made Fay Wray famous.
It is considered one of the greatest films ever made and earned $10 million ($250 million in 2026).

Nice to see media coverage on my fellow Canadian Sherlockian and BSI, Tom Ue. He is one of only two Baker Street Irregulars in Atlantic Canada. Of course, I'm the only one in Alberta, but that's beside the point. ;-)

I'm sorry to learn that author Dan Simmons has died at 77. I quite enjoyed The Terror, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night, Song of Kali, Fires of Eden. He also wrote The Fifth Heart, wherein Sherlock Holmes suspects he might be a fictional character. www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/l...

Naheed Nenshi needs to step up β€” or step down The former mayor of Calgary was supposed to bring the Alberta NDP back to political power. Instead, they're further away from it than they've been in a decade.

My latest: Naheed Nenshi has been a monumental disappointment as Alberta NDP leader β€” and it could actually get worse from here. #abpoli #cdnpoli

Danielle Smith Is No Separatist. She’s Much Worse | The Tyee The premier’s referendum plan is destructive, divisive and ultimately evil.

"Smith seeks to initiate a Maple MAGA revolution. It’s a vision that would see her take control of the courts, punish the most vulnerable members of our society, undermine the rule of law and destroy Canadian federalism."

Halfway through & find it one of the finest books on the topic. Far too pricey & should have been pitched to a mainstream publisher who publishes media books, as it has academic rigor, but also eminently readable & accessible. No regrets on the cost. This is reinvigorating my interest in the topic.

Me, Jonah and the Fascist Whale I woke up this morning as I do every day, poured a cup of coffee and began researching and writing.

Today is the one year anniversary of starting the Charlie Angus resistance substack. A year ago, I was speaking about the hypotheticals - the suspension of the rule of law, concentration camps, threats against other nations.
Now it is daily conversation.
