For the former, the groups weren't private. That was kind of the point of them. For the latter I'd argue it heavily depends on -who- specifically. Most of mainstream media? Sure, I'd agree it's neutral in the best of cases. There's some media I think do good there though.

I'd argue that if anything being high profile makes you safer. Consider, a lot of the high profiles victims of ICE that were imprisoned ended up being released: the unknown ones didn't.

I think there's a bit of fallacy in thinking you are safe unless you are made famous.

Mind you, I'm on the fence here, but to me it feels like mostly placebo. The victims of ICE didn't need to be filmed to be murdered, and filming was the reason they didn't get away with it.
