Believe me, the Spanish weren't always kind in naming things in the Philippines though. There's a city in the Philippines called "Cagayan de Oro" & in Spanish that means "Gold shit" (Cagayan derives from "cagar" meaning 'shit' in Spanish). Pretty contemptuous name from the Spanish, I think.

"Puto" in regard to these Filipino rice cakes actually derives from Malay "putu", which in turn derives from Tamil "puttu" meaning "portioned", not Spanish at all. Putu are rice cakes in Malaysia and Indonesia & Puttu is a rice & coconut dish eaten at breakfast in South India & Sri Lanka.

Go home Canada. You're drunk. Love, Australia. (Just kidding, of course.)

It's crazy to think that after the success of Bluey overseas (so much so that Bluey had a float in Macy's Thanksgiving parade in the US in recent years!) that Australian children's television content actually went down. Why wouldn't you want to bring more Aussie children's TV content to the world?

September 1st is the start date for Christmas celebrations in the Philippines (and for diaspora Filipinos). The August start date is more for those who particularly love Christmas, not really a firm date for all Filipinos to start Christmas celebrations.

It was even seen as a "status" thing since that's where the popular school kids would go. In the country, social events especially are important. But yeah, it would be nice to see social events that don't involve animal abuse or gambling but are fun, safe & good for the local community.

I hope the racing culture changes. It would be nice to have a good reason to bring the local community together. I grew up in a regional town in Victoria that has it's own cup day (as many regional town & cities do) & a lot of people see the day as a fun day that brings together friends & family /1

I'm a millennial mixed white & Filipino woman & there was a time where we were called "Eurasians". I know that "Eurasian" is a term that refers to both continents of Europe & Asia & is used in other contexts, so it can be confusing in that way. There are people who use that though, not "Wasian". /1

As an millennial, it's so weird watching Channel 10 promote #BigBrotherAU with footage from like over 20 years ago (The first season was in 2001!). Is that supposed to get millennials to watch the show, even though Gen Z is their target audience? Makes no sense to me. #BBAU #australia

Rodrigo Duterte was known for his extrajudicial killings back when he was the mayor of Davao City. So yeah, he's been doing that for longer than what a lot of people realise. Many Filipinos (especially older Filipinos) refuse to discuss that though but it's slowly changing.

I also really appreciated the diversity in the film as well & that the Chinese restaurant owners came back in a way that wasn't othering like when they appeared in #freakyfriday and it felt inclusive. I felt like Freakier Friday was a good mix of nostalgia and newness. #disneyfilms #filmreviews

I hate it when Americans insist on doing Aussie accents & they come out so badly (Looking at you Kate McKinnon & Kristen Wiig!). Grating to the ears. Admittedly, Manny's English accent wasn't consistent in the film either. I thought the young woman who played his daughter did a bit better though. /2

I just watched #freakierfriday basically for #mannyjacinto & I was sad that he didn't have more screen time in it. It was a fun movie though. My least favourite part was SNL's Chloe Fineman as a dance instructor with an AWFUL "Aussie" accent. She sounded like she was doing a really bad NZ accent. /1

Introduce yourself using one food you refuse to eat, one movie you'll never watch again, and one song you can't stand.

Potato salad with raisins in it
The Revenant
Any song by Morgan Wallen

LOL! That's fair enough! Yeah, people who aren't gluten free shouldn't be doing that. I actually have IBS issues & have been told to be "semi" Low FODMAP (after having tried that diet in the past), so I have to be somewhat GF now. If I didn't have to do it, I wouldn't. But it does help a bit for me.

When I was younger & getting into fandoms, I used to think the term "AU" stood for Australia instead of "Alternate Universe". So I used to think that people would write about their characters in Australia & wondered why I didn't recognise Australia in their stories. As an Aussie, I was confused. LOL

Wow that quote from the female interviewee hits hard. Resilience is very admirable but resilience is also very tiring. Resilient people are allowed to feel tired without being made to feel guilty about feeling tired. Seeing climate change affecting the Philippines like this makes me feel sad.

I'm definitely not a Swiftie, so I don't exactly know for sure. I can't imagine that being an eldest daughter has affected Taylor that much since it took her 20 years to even mention that in her music at all. It doesn't feel like solidarity to me, it feels like a cop out. #eldestdaughter #filipino

Being an eldest daughter of an immigrant parent, I find it kind of insulting that Taylor Swift has a new song called "Eldest Daughter" but barely writes about the actual experience of being one, let alone a heavily involved one. She's never mentioned it in her music before (that I'm aware of). /1
