It’s been a mixed start to the year in icu. The highs have included being visited by ex patients who looked fabulous and were doing really well, and the lows are definitely losing patients. Some patients and families just leave their mark on you. It hits hard when they can’t be saved #med.sky

Does anyone use the GIK (glucose, insulin and potassium) protocol for cardiogenic shock? Would love to hear from anyone who has used it. #med.sky #icu

I have Christmas Day off this year but we are crazy busy in ICU. Lots of staff sickness also

We’ve started offering ‘heartbeat in a bottle’ keepsakes for grieving relatives. It’s a part of an ecg of their loved ones heartbeat in a little bottle. We also offer handprints. I’d be interested to hear what other ICU’s do? #medsky

We were visited by one of our previous long stay ICU patients. First time we have seen him since discharge. He looked so different, so strong. It was emotional and fabulous. A much needed boost for all of us on ICU. ❣️ #icu

Completely agree. It’s completely underused IMO

We do patient diaries for intubated or delirious patients. We encourage families to also write in them. We also do de-briefs for stressful days for ICU team members. These are verbal those, but maybe writing thoughts would also be useful?

It’s lovely 🥰. Our awake patients patients get so much out of the doggie visits. It cheers them up as it’s a reminder of life before ICU

My ICU is lucky to have this beautiful therapy dog who comes every weekend to visit patients, relatives and us staff. The joy he brings is immeasurable, especially for our longer term pts. ❣️ #criticalcare #medsky #dogs
