The lease of land for the sanctuary is only the beginning. WSP still has much to do for the lease to be finalized. The project is estimated to cost abt $20 million, and the yearly operating costs abt $2 million. All funding for the project will come from donations - hardly a viable financial plan.

They granted the WSP the right to use Crown lands without public hearings or legislative debate. Bypassing Landowner Consent despite previous statements requiring unanimous consent, they proceeded without it. This lacks transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.

Feed the Belugas: "So when a local business owner talks again and again about economic revival, “opportunities,” and the sanctuary being needed for their success… while barely addressing the whales’ welfare, their safety, or the major contamination issues on site… it naturally raises questions."

Moving the Marineland whales to a sanctuary at this site will expose them to pollution and disease they’re not prepared for. They have lived in captivity for decades. Official reports and expert analyses show there are very real risks.

The proposed site faces numerous logistical and environmental challenges/risks. The legacy of gold mining has left significant contamination, posing risks to health and ecosystems. Studies have documented high levels of arsenic and mercury in sediments and marine organisms in the Wine Harbour area.

The WSP is a tax-exempt, nonprofit American organization relying on fundraising and donations. The Whale Sanctuary Project's financial disclosures raise concerns about its operational viability and funding. This raises concerns about its financial sustainability.
