Self-orientation destroys trust. Trust is built on credibility, reliability, and intimacy, but if you’re really good at those things, but highly self-oriented, your trust score will be low.

The trust equation
Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) / Self-Orientation

Credibility: they know their stuff
Reliability: they always deliver
Intimacy: I feel safe with them
Self-Orientation: Are they focused on my interests or theirs?

The US culturally scores high in self-orientation, so it makes sense that they would feel their peers are untrustworthy or "bad". It doesn't really matter how credible, reliable, or safe you are. High self-orientation destroys all of that.

I rarely ride downtown at rush hour these days, but was happy to see it's still just as satisfying to pass all the cars stuck in gridlock on center street. #yycbike

So much fun! It doesn't even look as bad as it feels in this video honestly.

The Little Book of Lykke β€” Calgary Public Library The Little Book of Lykke β€” Wiking, Meik, β€” "A practical guide to what makes us happy, from the CEO of the Happiness Research Instititue in Copenhagen and bestselling author of The Little Book of Hygge...

That idea (soft edges) comes from this book that I was gifted years ago. Worth checking out for anyone into community building & what actually makes people happy: calgary.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S9...

Oh yeah, I don't think I do have that. I should look into it again. I kind of forgot about it for a while there, but I'll add it to my growing list (I've got small snow shovel, rearview mirror, and new swept back bars for the old mountain bike turned winter bike).

Garages are definitely an annoyance we're stuck with though. & if we have to have them, I'd rather they we tucked away in the back. I don't think there's any reasonable way for me to retrofit a basement garage to my 80s infill πŸ˜‚

Yes, those are nice too. I'm a real sucker for a little front porch spot to hang & passively exist, maybe say hi to a neighbour now & then. In the absence of good third spaces, soft edges are a great way to foster community. Just being out in front of your house encourages interaction.

& they're better than if your commute is mostly residential streets! We're in the freeze-thaw faze of winter where you've either got giant puddles on the paths or giant frozen puddles. lol

Yup, the section east of center street is due pretty soon if I remember correctly. I think the west section is actually worse in terms of redevelopment scars though honestly.

It's ROUGH in the winter. But I do love my alleyway in general & prefer houses without a giant garage on their face. I think front garages make your streetscape much more antisocial. (At least that's what I found growing up in a community with driveways & front garages vs our current community)

This picture doesn't do the grade justice. Struggling to get 360 videos onto my phone lately cuz I have one of me getting down this spot. Lol.

omg the side-to-side box movement! I've held my breath through those beforeβ€”it doesn't take much for that to take you down (or push your tire into your friend's back tire and almost take you both out!).

Like you said, not my first choice, but a much better option than what we have currently (we also talked to them about narrowing the driving lanes, which would result in a lower speed limit on that artery & I am all for that!)

This is also the plan for other areas. Part of the reasoning I've heard from city planners is that it preserves street parking on routes where removing it is a big point of contention & also, by labelling it a MUP instead of a bike lane, we avoid some nonsense from Dreeshan and other critics.

This is part of why 20th avenue will look expensive when they do it as well. As often as possible, the city tries to bundle things. Parts of 20th are due for resurfacing, so it makes sense to upgrade other pieces of the streetscape at the same time. That's responsible spending, actually, Dan.

I know. My husband likes to remind me that it's human nature not to care about things until they directly impact you, but we are all capable of empathy. (& I like to think of it like, the happier the people around me are, the easier it is for me to find joy too.)

That's what I suspected, but was feeling a little sneaky about it since I'm on the school council.

I know! I'm on the equivalent of the PTA and feel like such a busy body, but it also drives me nuts that this stuff is allowed to continue to affect our youth, elderly, and disabled. We're all just tone misstep away from being disabled ourselves & I'm not getting any younger.

That's what I assumed. We need to bring it up with our principal, but I'm also not overly optimistic. There's no money in the budget.

Our alley is a frozen death puddle on an incline. I have a come to Jesus moment every morning as I hope I don't start a spin as I'm exiting the alley onto 2nd street.

This kind of shit is just another reason why I'm on the side of the city being responsible for snow clearing on sidewalks. The fact that we don't makes mobility hard for our most vulnerable. #yyccc

04.03.2026 15:31 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

As a school council, we have talked about adding some bins with salt so that parents can put some down and not only would this not help without an added boost to proper snow removal, but it also shouldn't be on parents to do this. I'm just not really sure how we got here.

04.03.2026 15:29 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I ask because the sidewalks around my daughter's CBE school are a nightmare. Their snow removal is always really lacking, but it's been especially noticeable this winter for some reason. By contrast, the Francosud school down the street contracts its snow removal and it is top tier.

No, I agree. I can't remember when these racks went in. I think they're relatively new. I'll probably blame Sobeys like I do for all of the terrible changes they've made to the Safeway brand. Haha. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if that family was on that side either.
