One of the hardest-to-hear kinds of responses to my new story are premised on ICE detention being motivated by profit—and in part, it is—or on cheap or free forced labor—again, some is. But these detention centers also cost millions and now billions to run. Profit is not a top motive here.

Worth noting that only 29% of Columbia's undergraduate population is white American students right now.

It's hard to imagine that this deal isn't going to radically transform the makeup of the Columbia student body, and very quickly.

Calling these outcomes 'deals' or 'agreements' is in the interest of both university administrators (who do not want to appear passive) and the White House (which does not want to appear authoritarian).

They are extortions—displays of power & dominance designed to coerce all universities watching.

Searched @floatingcoffin profile for "Colbert" and found many posts raising alarm about the shows cancelation and how things will only get worse. "I could care less about Colbert himself or other people's celebrity worship bs. If they come for Colbert its going to get a lot worse for you. That was my point. In what way did I defend or even say that i liked Colbert? Or that i care about him, at all? ... The Late Show is 33 years running! Colbert is EXTREMELY famous. My point is obvious. We've moved further down the path of becoming a full blown fascist state. Your point is valid & it must be maddening. Its worth pointing out that the Colbert situation is very ALARMING for a variety of reasons. If it can happen to a dude like Colbert who is making that kind of money for powerful people, just imagine what they'll do to you when you speak too loudly. This is terrifying stuff."

Part 2: This white person is profoundly concerned about the Colbert situation. Not because I care about him, I dont watch the show, but because it seems like a HUGE show is ending due to Colbert being critical of the president. An attack on freedom of press and speech affects all of us. Colbert needs to come out and explicitly tell us if they are being canceled because of Trump If he doesn't he's just another coward who deserves what he got.

Just remember that many of the folks hailing Colbert's show being canceled as a harbinger of doom were mighty quiet about Joy Ann Reid's show being canceled in February.
