Also I go back and forth on having students write a simple function so that they have better understanding of what's actually happening inside the functions they are using.

I think if you want to get to modeling in the class starting with the tidyverse NSE is helpful because it is weird to switch to formulas otherwise. All of a sudden you have to say forget all the $ stuff.

The biggest thing to me in teaching real beginners is that you need to spend time on univariate statistics so you really start with vectors. Then you transition to having tibbles/data frames as the handy way to manage multiple variables on the same unit of observation.

Basically, tidyverse for people who read left to right (and assuming you use a standardized code format (one step per line, good indenting) it encourages good habits and algorithmic thinking. It's wordy, but having verbs although some of the verbs (e.g. mutate) require some explanation.

Is Pinker an expert on disability? Gross to choose him to cite. I'm sure Harvard has someone who actually knows something about this. As usual, they focus on elite schools, but if anything for everyone else there is almost certainly under diagnosis.

Oh interesting because I said it wasn't an attribute because attr(penguins, "row.names") gave me all the numbers.

So when you dput a tibble there is something that is *not* an attribute that is called row.names and that is a vector of length 2 where the first value always seems to be NA and the second usually seems to the -1 * nrow. What is that??? Is there a way to access it? #rstats #tidyverse
