โI dropped a C-bomb into Tolstoyโ: one manโs quest to translate War and Peace into โbogan Australianโ
Melbourne man Ander Louis has translated hundreds of pages of the 19th century classic line by line to include Ford Falcons, wankers and drongos
โBloody hell, Prince Vasiฬli, Genoa and Luca are pretty much just Napoleonโs holiday homes now,โ reads the opening line of Leo Tolstoyโs seminal epic, War and Peace.
It goes on to depict a 19th century St Petersburg populated by โposh wankersโ, โcomplete drongosโ, โgorgeous sheilasโ and โmassive pissheadsโ. They โtalk shitโ, give โzero fucksโ and drink โcuppasโ, and before long, soldiers start โfanging aboutโ.

A year before she died (to the day), we all went cycling along the Gein in the Netherlands, from Weesp (where my parents lived & cycled in the 1980s) towards Abcoude - a landscape Piet Mondrian loved to paint. Thatโs how I like to think of her; cycling, content, towards Abcoude.

Itโs a year today since my mum died. I wish I could write everything about her, but then Iโd write forever, so Iโll leave it to this: she was the most beautiful person I have ever known.
