Hornytown Chutzpah by Andrew Hiller is a fun, Yiddish-infused, hardboiled detective story about a private eye and a demon. Out 3/17 from Atthis Arts.

The starlings have definitely moved in, and there are now at least a half dozen mobbing my feeders. I am just grateful we finally got the chimney cap on last fall, as this spring I shouldn't have to free any trapped starlings from my fireplace.
04.03.2026 21:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I tried hard not to be early for a meeting at a diner this morning, but failed. But I don't mind, as I've spent the time flirting with a very distinguished gentleman (who seems to be about one year old).
04.03.2026 14:58 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am a little skeptical of the Red-winged Blackbird ID. There are plenty of them in this general area, but this neighborhood isn't really the right habitat, and the portion of the recording this ID is from is so faint...

#TenMinuteMerlin as a welcome distraction to picking a fight with my kid's school this morning. My first ACTUAL MORNING recording and look how many more birds it caught!

Okay, so I actually made a batch of muffins before midnight tonight, because I have to get up early in the morning tomorrow (today), but then I stayed up til 2 am making this list anyway.
I heartily recommend each and every one of these for your #TransRightsReadathon TBR.

And I mean, wouldn't I love to be able to pick up these brands locally, rather than paying the skyrocketing shipping costs? Obviously. But not at Target.
03.03.2026 19:55 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I thought I would miss Target when I started boycotting it, but I have not. I don't know what it would take to get me back there, but this ain't it. Every once in a while I get an email from a brand I follow saying "We are now on the shelves at Target!" and it just gives me the ick for the brand.
03.03.2026 19:55 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I am a little disappointed the app didn't pick up the pair of downy woodpeckers I saw hanging out in the yard during the recording period, but maybe they just weren't feeling chatty at the time?

Screengrab from Merlin Bird ID. The five birds identified in this image are: White-breasted Nuthatch Brown Creeper Dark-eyed Junco American Goldfinch Canada Goose There is an icon near the Brown Creeper ID that indicates it would be an unusual find in this location.
Today's #TenMinuteMerlin is more like it!
I am a little skeptical of the Brown Creeper ID as I have NEVER seen one in my yard. But while it is unlikely in this location, it isn't absurd, so who knows? Maybe it (like the geese) flew over on its way to the river.

Not to disparage any of these birds! (Except maybe the house sparrows.) I do love the chickadees and the goldfinch. They are just my usual visitors.
(Except maybe the song sparrows. I admit I need to get better at all the different sparrow species.)
Of course as soon as I brought my phone back inside, there are suddenly WAY more birds in my yard. They are still mostly house sparrows and goldfinch, though.
