Vaccine deniers are arguing that the vaccines are not safe (untrue) or effective (also untrue). If bodily autonomy were the issue, they’d argue they don’t have the right to make that decision for their kids because the kids have bodily autonomy… but the see kids as property.

also how “believe women” became “believe (all) women” and “Black Lives Matter” became “only Black Lives Matter” in the minds of people inclined to disagree with the general sentiments in the first place. This rhetorical tic really hinges on the idea every statement or belief is an iron axiom.

Part of this is people looking to avoid any responsibility for their choices. It’s how believing in free speech became supporting hate speech, no one wanted to be responsible for drawing a line and defending their choices.

I’m not sure if it’s uniquely American but the idea you have to shut down any discernment or nuance when you think about principles is the opposite of thinking.
