the idea of not being a passionate strap top is crazy... shameful even...

i think that the attitude of "it doesnt bother me when other people are fat, i still think that they're attractive, I just don't want to be fat and hate my body personally" is so pervasive and, speaking from experience, involves a degree of lying to yourself. Because of course you don't want to be fatphobic, of course you love your fat friends and don't want them to feel bad, of course you're attracted to some fat ppl, but of course, you want to have a body that's 'perfect' and of course the 'perfect' body just happens to be thin and small and adheres to a certain degree of athleticism and eugenicist beauty standards. If there is truly nothing wrong with being fat, why is it so scary? are you relieved ever time there's someone fatter than you in the room? i truly think that no matter how much you claim that its purely something internalized/directed towards yourself, fatphobia is always externalized. and its a tough pill to swallow bc all of us in ~progressive~ circles don't want to be bigoted, but just being in denial about your capacity for harm and bigotry does not help anyone or make anything better. and again it is smth i struggle with, and to a certain degree i get it because it is scary being fat! its scary facing medical fatphobia, its scary taking up space, its scary having ppl treat you differently, its scary being scrutinized for eating habits, its scary having clothes not fit u, etc. but the solution isnt an individualized "well I want to be skinny and thats my choice" the solution is building solidarity and actively working against those thoughts and beliefs even if its hard. and to do so you have to recognize ur own complicity and gain a degree of awareness over how ur words and actions effect others, especially ur fat friends. if you really, truly, deep in your heart don't think that being fat is bad, think that fat people are beautiful and attractive and are worthy of love, you need to try your hardest to stop being scared.
