NEW: Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke until 4p today now includes Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder and most of the I-25 corridor. Smoke will be thick at times today, especially north of Denver.

Smoke is from the Elk + Lee fires on the Western Slope.

Why low temps matter on hot weeks like this:

Denver's average summer low: about 55-60°. Comfortable.

Lows this week: 65-70°. Temps mainly above 70° at night.

If you don't have AC, that's the difference between a comfortable night of sleep vs a hot/rough one.

We only average 16 days per year at 95°+ (46 at 90°+). Rare, but not unheard of. Heat wave.

It's a mix of smoke from Western Slope/Arizona/Utah wildfires, but looks (based off of satellite) like it's mainly from the Elk Fire near Meeker.

Denver highs of 97°+ for 5 straight days is highly unusual: we’ve only done that 11 times in recorded history (since 1872).

There was a 41 mph gust @DENAirport a few mins ago, and a special weather statement for up to 50 mph winds downtown.

That could’ve prompted the delay, but it wasn’t lightning. Again, I’m a bit unsure myself.
