I can't take credit for it :-). My wife learned it from another parent and we used it on a long flight. Our son was quite the restless flier at that age, and this helped emmensely.

When our son was 2 or 3, we used an empty Pringles can (hole cut in the lid) and a bunch of straws, and he spent about 90 minutes putting the straws in the can.
