Vacancy β€” Food for thought. The science of blockades, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945
The Amsterdam School for Historical Studies (ASH) invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position (4 years, 1.0 FTE). This position is part of the ERC Synergy-funded research project BLOCKADE, which explores the global blockades of the First and Second World Wars, and their aftermaths. More information can be found on the project website: https://blockades.eu/

Absolutely stunning. And I was so ready to cringe at all the (especially sensory) things I'd been told were cringe-worthy (and I am prone to cringing), and none of them were in the slightest.

I just can't help but think that if this same movie had been directed by a man, it would perhaps still provoke discussion, but certainly not the kind of mass hate campaign that's been unleashed on Fennell.

All I'm saying is: go see it for yourself, and make up your own mind.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It suggests to me that something more is at work here than merely a disgruntled BrontΓ« fanbase cross at the freedom a director took with historical material (I get it, I am still cross about Pride & Prejudice 2005) or a proportionate number of people for whom the film is simply not to their taste.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm sure there are legit reasons to dislike the film, as there are legit reasons to like it, as with all movies. I'm not saying you have to love it. But the degree to which this film has been maligned is not normal. And the difference between what I expected and what I saw was immense.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

(Reminded me of many a meeting or conference where someone passed an idea of mine off as their own or explained my argument back at me.)

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

For instance, if you can come away from this movie thinking that it is NOT intentionally funny, I really don't know how you think screenwriting works. And I can't help but think that you must have trouble in general crediting women with good ideas or good humor. Such an old trope.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I liked it so much that I've gone back to some of the negative comments, and I feel very differently about them now. I can't help but think that A LOT of misogyny is at work here.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

At the same time, it was just as much a movie of our time, which all good adaptations are. Bitingly captures the vapid spirit of the present (omg that Shakespeare scene, Alison Oliver is a genius). It felt NOW in the best way possible.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And we both came away absolutely loving it. Talked about it afterwards for ages. It's hilarious and tragic, visually stunning, with superb performances, and most of all, it absolutely captures the spirit of the book imho.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I had read that the movie is unwillingly hilarious, so bad it made entire audiences roar with laughter. So my friend and I were hoping to at least be entertained. But we did have a code word to leave in case it became too bad. All of that is to say, we fully expected to hate it.

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I only went see it because the negative comments got so voluminous that it seemed to become a kind of cultural moment, and I've greatly enjoyed some hate-watching experiences in the past (hello The Holiday).

01.03.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I had heard so many negative comments about the movie; I honestly can't remember being bombarded with so much negativity for a film ever. I hated the trailer, having read the book, which I didn't recognize in it at all. Of course the failure to cast an actor of color for Heathcliff made me furious.

To the (numerous) Fennell "Wuthering Heights" haters out there:

What on earth were you on about. That movie is brilliant, and I'll die on this hill.

Our public history course on the history of the Amsterdam School of Home Economics received some love this week.
