I don't know why anyone should be surprised by the Baltic nations leading the way - Finland in particular has been preparing for it for years.

In my experience they are usually much more clued-up about local issues than any other politicians.

I was on a committee with an Edinburgh councillor until a few years ago and he often referred to 20 minute Neighbourhoods - 'low traffic neighbourhoods' seem to have developed from that, only in a way that means they don't have to bother providing more facilities to enable people to give up cars.

I was just about to comment on the Edinburgh situation too. I don't see the concept itself as Stalinist, but the councillors who are forcing through the road closures of minor roads and causing more congestion on the nearest, already congested major road, have acted like dictators in some ways.

It seems to me we are more likely to be doomed by human stupidity.

This is really bad news. My brother nearly died of complications from measles but some people seem to have reverted to thinking of it as an inevitable childhood illness.

Sometimes putting on a brave face is the only thing that prevents families from completely disintegrating.

There are lots of excellent uses for the internet - research etc. What's needed is some education about how to evaluate sources.

This article made me laugh - all my son's primary school teachers used to complain about his handwriting, one even wrote in his report that he would never get anywhere because of it. But one teacher (in 1988!) was more optimistic, saying all assignments/exams would soon be done on computers anyway.

About halfway through the 30th novel in my main mystery series and ar the same time I've almost finished the 3rd in another series which is set in Edinburgh and this time features a suspicious death in a location not far from where I live.

Just finished the Sarah Morgan one - I find her books reliably enjoyable, especially at this time of year!
