Is update of AS in low-risk prostate cancer in Ontario liked to guideline publication? | Canadian Urological Association Journal

Good concise article on the status of Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer. As treatment/surveillance becomes more precise, Screening becomes more palatable for Primary Care.

Not that I’ve seen nationally. We have a paper from UCSF network hopefully coming soon… our local rates are up quite a bit but still low esp among younger men

Great Q. I’m optimistic. % of low risk disease at dx has fallen to ~20%, and rates of AS for low risk are rising. We’re increasingly able to defineβ€”and even implementβ€”smarter screening.

Totally agree. NPV for MRI over many studies is consistently more like ~90% β€” when read by high volume experts.

MRI pre-biopsy is super helpful, but for a reflex test to r/o bx altogether we have better options that are also (in the US and only in the US) a lot less expensive.

After a shocking shooting, Americans vent feelings about health insurance β€” NPR The death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson triggered a deluge of painful stories about health care denials on social media.

Brian Thompson’s assassination is a horrifying and tragic. But maybe something good will come of this renewed conversation about an industry whose _entire_ business model has been based for decades on profiting at the expense of patients and providers.

Happy 76th birthday to 2009 Nobel Prize recipient Elizabeth Blackburn, whose 1984 discovery of telomerase not only demonstrated that cells can use RNA to construct DNA, but has spawned an entire field of biological study.

Preacher -> choir!

I’m still solidly in the camp of not even calling GG1 β€˜cancer’ let alone treating it. But this is yet more support, imho, for early screening, _selective_ workup of ⬆️PSA, and tailored management of aggressive disease.
