Out this morning in Philosophers' Imprint. We are owed, in the strict moral sense, due process of law. I argue against purely instrumentalist accounts of procedural rights: they imply a denial of our status as rights claimants. Open access. journals.publishing.umich.edu/phimp/articl...

Mohammad Rasoulof Had to Escape Iran to Finish His Most Daring Film Yet Facing an eight-year prison sentence, Mohammad Rasoulof had to make the most difficult decision of his life.

'Rasoulof decided to β€œtell the stories of those who say no” and succeed in their defiance.' A remarkable story of the nature and political significance of creative endeavor under tyranny, by my writer colleague Amir Ahmadi Arian.

It may be that there’s a sense among some in philosophy that that β€˜flashy’ self-promotion (e.g., a sleek website) indicates weakness of the work itself. (β€˜Can’t the material speak for itself?’)

It’s an unfortunate attitude, if real: a nice site should be a sign of ability to professionalize.

Blaming grad students for reductions because they fought for equitable compensation is disingenuous: it obscures that the university is making *decisions* about their budget priorities. Naturally, equitable wages was going to cost the university more. But, the university chooses how to adapt.
