How does he rationalize the free speech bit to himself, given the Trump administration is now doing its best to kill free speech in the US? Such a clown.

I’m finding it difficult to believe that these are both posts on the official White House .gov website, but they are.

This is not really the right place for this post, but just came across this hilarious image based on a series of children’s books.

Yes. If she didn’t have such cautious and old fashioned parents she’d probably be a TikTok celebrity.

My young daughter suggested that I include a photo of our dog in my class slides at the beginning of semester, β€œbecause then the students won’t realize you don’t have a life.” Ouch.

Yep. Or it’s as if we’re doing that. I’m not recommending this view, obviously.

I honestly fear some of the people who hold this view might respond by saying: this seemingly bad consequence only follows on the assumption we should have public regulations and public health policies, but we shouldn’t. Let people die if God wants them to die.

A consensus is emerging: Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Where is the action? | Nesrine Malik It may feel hopeless to see supportive states continue to back Israel, but bearing witness matters for future reckoning, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

"It is a spectacle of slaughter. All unfolding in plain sight, livestreamed and posted by Palestinian citizens and journalists, witnessed by outsiders, and described by Israelis themselves."

In the Boston centered novel β€œMoonlight Mile,” Dennis Lehane has one of his characters visit Neptune Oyster Bar in the North End for a meal and the character declares they have the best lobster roll in New England. I agree. Seminannual lunch after teaching is completed.

We don’t either. Do many US departments? I just don’t know.

25.11.2024 01:09 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Okay. I don’t mean to deny that sometimes it makes sense to promote the use of one term rather than another for something just because that way people will evaluate the thing referred to in a particular way, but I think we’re agreeing this is pretty much all we’re talking about with this debate.

24.11.2024 14:46 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean, suppose we don’t call listening to an audio book reading (for anyone). If we still valued experiences and skills of processing information that way highly enough, would it matter?

24.11.2024 14:27 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So what is essential (as a necessary condition) to reading is good processing of information? If I’m tired I might read something with my eyes and then not take in the information well, but I’d still say it’s reading. I don’t really get this debate. Who cares if we don’t call something β€˜reading’?

Is Boston U. Blaming a New Contract for Its Freeze on Ph.D. Admissions? The university’s decision points to a broader set of tensions surrounding graduate-student unionization and the need for reform in doctoral education.

And the CHE now also has an article out which mentions my department’s excellent placement record, fortuitously. www.chronicle.com/article/is-b...
