4️⃣ While accessibility centers disabled folks, making our spaces accessible ultimately benefits everyone in our communities. Let's work together to make our streams and content engaging and accessible for all!

Instead of lightheartedly saying you have ADHD when you're not genuinely concerned that you have it, try saying, "I'm having trouble with," "I'm overwhelmed," or "I'm unsure." Instead of "falling on deaf ears," try "You didn't hear me," "Can we go through that again?" or "The group didn't seem to listen to me." Instead of "the blind leading the blind," try saying that someone is unknowledgeable, inexperienced, or has a lack of management support or leadership skills.

3️⃣ Make your language more inclusive! Ableist and sanist language (i.e., dumb, crazy) are commonly used and ingrained in our everyday language. Making an active and conscious effort to lessen your use of ableist language makes your communities more welcoming.

2️⃣ Use alt text when posting promotional images or any content on your socials! Without alt text to describe your image, people who use screen readers or other assistive technology aren’t able to engage with your content. Be as descriptive as possible!

1️⃣ Providing open or closed captions on your streams allows those with hearing impairments or language barriers to enjoy your content with fewer obstacles. Whether through a website or a plug-in, this is one of the simplest ways to improve the accessibility of your streams.

Katelyn (she/they) @jstkatelyn - Q1: 'What does Pride Month mean to you?" A1: "Pride Month to me is getting to be authentically and unapologetically myself *more* than usual. It's about occupying spaces that aren't traditionally ours. It's about lifting voices within the community and celebrating all our wins."

Q2: "How do you celebrate Pride Month in your content and community?" A2: "This month for pride we are celebrating by joining a raid train that is raising money for Point of Pride! Similar to what I do in Hispanic Heritage month, we will be learning about a figure from queer history every stream as well!" Q3: "What has been your experience in the streaming and content creation space as someone part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community?" A3: "Over the past year soooo much has changed for me. I have started exploring my gender identity and my community took to using my correct pronouns right away. I also have recently come out as a lesbian to my community and I have been met with nothing but love and support. I know I have a safe space on the internet or I would have never felt comfortable to do that."

Q4: "How can folks advocate for and uplift your community?" A4: "People can educate themselves on history, challenges, and experiences of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. They can work on using inclusive language with their friends, family, workplace, and just everyday situations they are in. They can speak out against discrimination in the community and use their privilege to address any kind of homophobia or transphobia." Q5: "Is there a LGBTQIA2S+ character in any books/movies/shows that you resonate with, and why?" A5: "Charlie Bradbury from Supernatural!! She was the first femme queer person I saw on tv who had all of the same nerdy interest that I had. She is freaking badass and always inspired me." Q6: "Is there anything else you would like to share?" A6: "Queer voices will not be silenced. I am so proud of everyone in the community. I know it's not safe for everyone to come out but know you are seen and loved so so much. Remember to take care of each other this month and year round."

Support Black creatives in and out of your community. Patronize local and online Black businesses. Continue to learn the correct history of Black descendants of slavery. Donate to Black-led and Black-centered organizations. Advocacy isn’t one size fits all; make advocacy work for YOU. (4/6)

Today, descendants of enslaved people still deal with oppressive barriers and forces, attempting to stifle their joy and resilience. The fight isn’t over. As advocates, it’s crucial to look out for each other and support marginalized communities in need. (3/6)

This policy change was withheld from enslaved peoples in the South and wasn't implemented by the Confederacy to continue their exploitation of enslaved bodies. On June 19, 1865, Union troops traveled to Galveston Bay, Texas to notify over 250K people that they were free. (2/6)

A3: "I start every stream by doing a little "check-in" by encouraging my community to share how they are doing, rating from 1-5. A2: “Being a Pacific Islander, Chamorro in particular, I love to educate my community about Guam culture by showing recipes of Chamorro cuisine, sharing Islander music I grew up listening to, and introducing Chamorro language. For example, I always greet my family by saying "Håfa Adai!" Q3: "What are you proud of, but never have an excuse to talk about?" A3: "My grandparents introduced me to a Chamorro song called "Hagu" by Flora Baza Quan. It's a popular love song from Guam! I learned it on my guitar and educated myself on the Chamorro language/pronunciation. I performed it for my mother and grandparents, which made their hearts so happy!"
