I'm in one of those periods where I have too many ideas for drawings but too little time and/or energy to actually draw 😭

Serves me right to grab tons of ref packs, it's like the artist equivalent of putting more on your plate than you can eat.

I'll definitely use those eventually, hopefully soon.

Yeah, especially with the limited disk space.

Unless you can host the PNGs elsewhere and have the download button fetch it from there I guess, but that's really getting out of hand.

Oh wait, you can't do that on Neocities since it's all static.

Yeah nevermind ^^

Unless you want to manually upload all your pics in double but it gets tedious.

Typically in web dev you would put on the server your source image as a full res lossless file (for ex. PNG) and let the website scale it down and convert it as a WebP to display it on your page. It's less about storage space and more about data traffic.
So a download button would make sense here.

Oh older hardware I totally agree. Older software however, if it's not maintained anymore you won't go very far. Even on decades old hardware you better find some up to date software to run on it for the sake of accessibility and security, and thankfully there are community projects for that.

And again it's not a sudden change unilaterally decided by some techbros, it's been around for decades. Major companies like Microsoft, Adobe etc have zero excuse for not supporting it and leaving their users unable to work with widely available files.

I am an artist and a web dev. The websites I work on use WebP to comply with web standards (or else we get nuked by Google, they kinda decide who gets to live and who dies in limbo). If your web browser supports WebP images but your OS and art program don't, it's not my fault, nor yours, it's theirs

08.03.2026 23:17 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

I do understand *why* people are mad. All I'm saying is that they've been tricked into thinking websites were to blame for giving them a "bad file" when it's actually the software makers who refuse to support a file type that has been standard for over a decade.

08.03.2026 23:10 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

WebP has been a thing for 16 years now. So unless you are purposefully using some decades old outdated OS, which I assume you're not, it's not about you needing to upgrade, it's about your OS manufacturer purposefully preventing you to be up to the current web standards.

What goalpost? I've always held the same stance throughout this whole interaction. Maybe there is a misunderstanding, maybe my initial statement was poorly worded, but don't frame me trying to better rephrase my thoughts as "shifting the goalpost".

08.03.2026 23:02 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

You're the one spinning it that way. The only responsibility I'm calling out is from the software developers who don't support it

NOWHERE have I claimed it's up to the user to change their software and stop complaining

DO COMPLAIN! Not to web devs, but to Microsoft, Adobe etc.

Is that more clear?

08.03.2026 23:00 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

That is not my point!

For crying at loud, are you even reading me? Or are you just yelling at clouds for the sake of it?

Never have I ever claimed that it's YOUR responsibility to change OS, stop pretending I did!

08.03.2026 22:56 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Do you even fucking read my messages?

Where have I said the responsibility was on the USER?

I have always said the responsibility was on the OS DEVELOPER (ie Microsoft) and the ART PROGRAM DEVELOPER (ie Adobe) because that's what 99% of people complaining about WebP are dealing with.

08.03.2026 22:52 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Ok, cool. How about the OS then?

08.03.2026 22:49 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Fair enough, I assumed the art program in question was Adobe of some major tech company, in which case they would have fully deserved the hate.

But my art program is free and open source and still supports WebP, so even then it's doable.

08.03.2026 22:47 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Still doesn't change the fact the blame should go to Microsoft, not web developers who are just doing their job. It's not their fault if Windows Explorer has a bruh moment when it sees a WebP image, despite every web browser being able to display it with no issue.

08.03.2026 22:41 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

That's the point I've been trying to make since the very beginning that it's the software manufacturers that are responsible for supporting the standard.

If WebP had been replaced by a non-Google standard but was still unsupported by MS, users would have still complained, and rightfully so.

08.03.2026 22:41 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

... no?

No one should suffer. No one should be held back by Microsoft refusing to properly implement a widely used decade old image standard.

This has nothing to do with "vibe coding", web devs have been using WebP long before LLMs were even a thing.

08.03.2026 22:35 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

How about being mad at the fashy, TERFy, cryptobro and AI enthusiast hacks behind fuckass operating systems and art programs instead?

Using WebP is not exclusively a Bluesky thing, it's a standard. Not supporting it is definitely a Microsoft thing. They're the ones who deserve the hate.
