When that happens, it can lead to a displacement or splitting of the polar vortex, sending the colder air further south into the mid-latitudes instead of the cold air being locked around the polar region.

These waves can weaken the stratospheric polar vortex, causing a reversal from westerly to easterly. This leads to cold air descending and warming rapidly. (2/3)

You may have heard in the news that a SSWE may soon occur. SSWE is a significant disruption of the stratospheric polar vortex that begins with large-scale atmospheric waves getting pushed higher into the atmosphere. (1/3)

Weather word of the week: polar vortex.
The polar vortex is a low pressure areaβa wide expanse of swirling cold airβthat is parked in polar regions. During winter, the polar vortex at the North Pole expands, sending cold air southward. This often results in outbreaks of cold temp in the U.S.

A new report found that rising global heat is now killing one person per minute around the world. Fossil fuel usage has caused toxic air pollution, wildfires, & the spread of diseases. Heat-related deaths have surged by 23% since the 1990s to an average of 546,000 per year between 2012 and 2021.

So 2.6Β°C is better, but the problem is that climate impacts are way worse than we predicted.
