The scene’s taking me back to a night I’d love to bleach from my brain, but the soot clinging for dear life to the yellowed ceiling makes that impossible. “Thanks, Devin,” I spit into the ether, as if he can hear me from Chicago. And a big thanks to me, too, for treating my credit cards like Monopoly money. Piper takes a piranha chomp toward my fingers—luckily still covered by oven mitts—while I wave at the haze circling their fluffy little heads. They charge forward again. “Get back, I’m trying to save you! This is your fault!” My mistake for thinking they would be the easy, well-behaved angels I was assured they were. A ‘quick’ potty break turned into chasing a rogue Phoebe around my complex, begging her to slow down, while her sister snapped at my ankle. It took over thirty minutes to wrangle them, and the nuggets paid the price. I guess store-bought is not fine.
