The Guild has almost no relevance to the plot in the first book. They don't really show up at all, they are just talked about. That kind of exposition works in a novel, but is boring in a movie.
They become active players in Messiah, so I expect we will see much more of them in the third movie.
I understand this opinion and I'm also sad about some omissions. But I think it had to be done in order to curtail this story to a movie format.
You can't keep in all the complexities that exist in the novel. It would not work as a big event movie that needs to be accessible for large audiences.
