The 2026 Federal Budget Proposal Shutters The Institute for Museum and Library Services The details of the 2026 federal budget proposal spell out the goal of shutting down the Institute for Museum and Library services.

We now have the details of the federal 2026 budget proposal, and it spells the end of IMLS. The request is $6,000,000 to "conduct an orderly closeout of IMLS."

Whatever happens in the 2 court cases would be moot if this passes.

When my great-grandmother was in her 90s, she had a stack of VHS tapes she watched a lot. One day she chose one that surprised my grandmother. โ€œMa, you donโ€™t like the way that movie ends.โ€ She said, โ€œmaybe itโ€™ll end differently this time.โ€

Well, to be fair, they got rid of all the scientists, so thereโ€™s nobody to listen to anymore. Or to come up with a cure (or remind them that the best cure is people not getting it in the first place).
So, um, put onions on the soles of your feet and wash your face with morning dew?

The nice woman at Wild Bird Unlimited said mid-April! I just want to be prepared. And maybe Iโ€™m a little impatient.

A gray and white tuxedo cat with a pink nose, long white whiskers, and white paws is laying on a colorful paisley blanket. He has his front paws on what looks like someoneโ€™s leg wearing athletic pants. He has big green eyes and is looking at the camera.

Well I didnโ€™t talk about my Dad much so I donโ€™t blame you for meaning FezzBear. The cats were clamoring for wet food last night (after kibble) so I went and pulled out four cansโ€ฆ and then put one back. ๐Ÿ˜ข

They are both very missed. I assume you meant my cat because heโ€™s the one in the photo but honestly Iโ€™m having a hard time missing both right now.

Book spines (author, title, publisher)
Library spine labels
Stickers (again thinking library, we use genre stickers, location, or other attributes, like childrenโ€™s collection or large print)

Oh! Business cards, of course!
Promotional items (pens, stress balls) like you get from the bank
File folder tabs
Coffee mugs
T-shirts
Tattoos

Do the mechanisms themselves have to be small? Or just the tidbits of information? Because:
Gravestones
Memorial plaques
โ€œGeorge Washington Slept Hereโ€ signs
Signs on monuments
Cards next to artwork in museums

Hey Blueksy, if you're looking for magic books and magic school books that *aren't* horribly exclusionary, let me share some fantastic examples with you. #BookSky ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“š

These people arenโ€™t even saying they donโ€™t use the library. They just say theyโ€™ll use the library the next town over. We all share, but thatโ€™s because all the libraries pay to be in a materials sharing consortium, and if you donโ€™t have a library, then youโ€™re not part of it.

08.04.2025 20:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 7    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

No, sir, what isnโ€™t fair is that youโ€™re voting to defund town libraries, which cost roughly $60 per person annually, because you think you donโ€™t need it, because other people will do it for you.
Justโ€ฆ just support us, okay? Weโ€™re all doing our best here.

People who live in the next town over who have been saying theyโ€™ll defund their library and just use our library are SO MAD to find out that they arenโ€™t allowed to just use other townsโ€™ libraries. IT ISNโ€™T FAIR!

The Institute for Museum and Library Services Was Just Gutted DOGE fired all IMLS employees and closed down their emails. It is assumed all funding for 2025 coming from the federal agency will not be happening.

Email addresses for all IMLS staff were being disabled today. Those with questions or concerns over IMLS funding will no longer be able to reach the individual or individuals with whom theyโ€™d been working.
