The Sociological Review Annual Lecture 2025: Shahram Khosravi Shahram Khosravi – How to do Migration Studies in Dark Times Recorded live on 27 November 2025 James McCune Smith Building, University of Glasgow In this powerful lecture, Professor Shahram Khosravi explores what it means to produce knowledge about migration in β€œdark times”. Drawing on Hannah Arendt’s insight that darkness arises not from horror itself but from how horror is obscured or misrepresented, he examines the intellectual and political responsibilities of migration scholars today. As landscapes are ruined and communities displaced on a planetary scale, he asks: What kind of knowledge do we need now? Who needs migration studies, and why? A leading figure in border studies, forced displacement, and the anthropology of Iran, Professor Khosravi weaves ethnographic research with personal narrative to illuminate the crises shaping mobility and immobility across the globe. Speaker: Shahram Khosravi Professor of Anthropology, Stockholm University Author of The Illegal Traveler (2010), Precarious Lives (2017), and editor of After Deportation (2017), Waiting (2021), Seeing Like a Smuggler (2022), and The Gaze of the X-Ray (2024). Chair: Carin Runciman Senior Lecturer, University of Edinburgh Editor-in-Chief, The Sociological Review Discussant: KarolΓna AugustovΓ‘ Lecturer in Sociology, University of Glasgow Researcher on migration, violence, borders, and the everyday experiences of people on the move.
