モラルのない権力者がモラルを持って運用されてる制度に対してモラルハザードに繋がるとかいうの真面目に何なんだ？平和外交を放棄したりカタログギフト贈ったり好き放題してる総理の方がダンチでモラルぶっ壊れてるだろ

必要のない奨学金ということの帰結は、必要のない大学進学ということでしかないよね。良いね、高等教育を否定する総理大臣なんて凄い時代になったもんだと感慨もひとしおである。

The implication here is straightforward: that people with platforms, including Democratic politicians and media, need to keep highlighting the threat to democracy specifically — centering democracy as an issue in both word and deed.

To save democracy, you have to actually talk about democracy.

And we are seeing a similar version of this in the United States right now.

Research by @chenoweth.bsky.social and the Crowd Counting Consortium suggests that the perception of democratic threat, from Trump's power grabs and ICE, have played a critical role in motivating a mass resistance movement

And in Poland, where the incumbent PiS party was far better than Yoon or Bolsonaro at hiding their intentions to the mass public, it still came across clearly to the opposition parties — motivating them to overcome their ideological divisions and block PiS from forming a new government

When Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in December 2024, thousands of ordinary Koreans familiar with the country's history immediately perceived an acute threat of democratic collapse. Their spontaneous protests played a critical role in ending the emergency.

This happened in different ways in each place.

In Brazil, the Supreme Court perceived the democratic threat from Jair Bolsonaro almost immediately — and pushed back in ways that many Brazilians believe to be decisive today.

This is not a hypothetical fear. My piece focused on three countries — Brazil, South Korea, and Poland — where elected authoritarians were too blatant and their opponents did a good job persuading key audiences that the democratic threat was real.

The result, in each case, was authoritarian defeat.

This is why smart authoritarians, like Viktor Orbán or Benjamin Netanyahu, go to great lengths to hide their intentions behind a democratic veneer.

They know that, if they are too blatantly authoritarian, they risk generate a level of social resistance they cannot overcome.

These social groups — like the non-partisan political elite, civil society, the political opposition, and even the mass public — can mount effective resistance if they choose.

And their decision to resist is determined, in significant part, by how legible the authoritarian threat is to them.

I found that this is wrong. Democracy actually is a powerful motivating force for a critical slice of the population *if they perceive a real threat*.

I call this the "legibility" theory of democratic backsliding: the more legible the threat, the more likely it is to prompt effective pushback.
